If you aren’t stockpiling food and supplies right now, you may be in for a very uncomfortable future. Just ask Australians. Like a thief in the night, their western freedoms, once the envy of the world, have been stripped away. Tens of thousands of Aussies are...
15 People Who Succeeded Because They Left The Comfort Zone
Have you ever come across someone who’s done their level best to take the wind out of your sails?
Maybe you’ve had some amazing new idea, decided to start your own business, or achieved something you’ve been really proud of and this person has thrown a huge bucket of water over your excitement.
Perhaps you’ve gone against the grain and wanted to do things differently, only to be met with dismissal and consternation. Whatever it is, whoever dismissed your dreams, you need to remember that most people are really fond of their comfort zones.
When we have big ideas, we really can make people feel uncomfortable, and that can trigger all kinds of unpleasant reactions. People who are afraid of growth often dislike giants. We need to stop keeping ourselves small to fit into places we’ve outgrown.
Think about some of the greatest figures in history whose ideas were dismissed. What would the world be like today if they’d given up? Want some for instances? Here you go:
1 – Steven Spielberg was rejected from film school three times.
2 – Rudyard Kipling was fired by his editor, who said he did not know how to use the English language.
3 – Stephen King’s Carrie was rejected 30 times. The novel only came to be after his wife retrieved the manuscript from the trash and persuaded King to submit it again.
4 – Vincent Van Gough only sold one painting while he was alive, and that was to a friend, for a pittance.
5 – Lucille Ball’s drama teachers insisted she was a failure and urged her to try a different career.
6 – Abraham Lincoln went from sergeant to private during wartime and had several failed businesses behind him.
7 – Socrates was labeled an ‘immoral corruptor of youth’ and given a death sentence.
8 – Isaac Newton failed at the farming business and, aside from maths, did not do well at school.
9 – Charles Darwin was considered lazy and ‘below a common standard of intellect’.
10 – Albert Einstein did not speak until he was four, or read until he was seven; he was also expelled from school.
11 – Lady Gaga was dropped from her record label after only three months.
12 – Thomas Edison was fired from his job after a secret experiment went wrong. To be fair, he did burn a hole through the floor with acid, but still…
13 – Elvis Presley was told to go back to driving trucks.
14 – Oprah Winfrey was fired because she was unable to sever her emotion from her stories.
15 – Anna Wintour was fired from her junior job and her shoots were judged ‘too edgy’.
And as for me? I was called lazy at school and told to work with kids or be a dog groomer. I’ve done okay, thanks very much.
So now, dear reader, it’s your turn. Do not let the doubters hold you back.
Go on. Go for it!
If it doesn’t work out, you can either keep trying, armed with more wisdom, or you can do something else you’ve been dreaming of. At least you won’t look back thinking ‘if only…’.
