In his Gettysburg Address, President Lincoln said “that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” But that vaunted goal seems to be far from the truth today. Take for example recent actions in and by the judicial branch. How often have you heard of a judge “ruling” in a case, or “blocking” some action until he or she has a chance to review it? The first grievance the Founding Fathers listed in the Declaration of Independence was that the king “has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.” Today, it’s not the king, but the judges and bureaucrats who are refusing their assent to our law. Which begs the question, are we a nation of laws or of courts?
