Dr. Jay Lehr and Tom Harris are joined this week by Dr. Charles Dinerstein, a medical doctor with over 25 years of experience as a vascular surgeon. Dr. Dinerstein discusses the pros and cons of declaring obesity a disease, eligible for government and insurance company coverage under various medical plans. He also describes bariatric surgery and the changing cultural attitudes towards obesity, and the application of Critical Theory to Fat Studies.
In this radio program, Dr. Dinerstein lays out why the recent explosion in obesity presents such a serious health problem:
“Obesity touches any number of vital systems. It clearly affects our heart and our arteries. It causes hypertension. It puts more strain on the heart, so it increases the likelihood of developing congestive heart failure. Obesity also stresses our metabolic system, and you see a lot more people with Type 2 diabetes because of their weight than pretty much any other factor that we can look at. You see obesity causing osteoarthritis in the knee for hip and knee replacements.”
Dr. Dinerstein is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and Society for Vascular Surgery. He is also the Medical Director at the American Council on Science and Health, a non-profit science and health education organization. In addition to his medical degree, Dr. Dinerstein completed his MBA with distinction in the George Washington University Healthcare MBA program.
Join Dr. Jay Lehr, Tom Harris, and guest medical doctor Charles Dinerstein in this week’s episode of The Other Side of the Story to learn how bad the obesity epidemic has become, where it is going in the future and how we can solve this problem.
