Dr. Jay Lehr and Tom Harris are joined by engineer Ron Stein and independent public policy consultant Todd Royal to discuss how wind and solar power use rare earths and other minerals derived from child and slave labor in developing countries. Todd and Ron are the authors of “Clean Energy Exploitations – Helping citizens understand the environmental and humanity abuses that support ‘clean’ energy.”
Here is an excerpt from their book:
“Cobalt is second in line when it comes to importance of rare earth minerals needed for solar panels, wind turbines, and all types of batteries to exist; but the world’s top producer, the Democratic Republic of Congo, has at least 40,000 children – some as young as 4-years old – working with their parents for less than $2 a day. Cave-in’s, constant exposure to toxic, radioactive water, dust, and dangerous air loaded with cobalt, lead, and uranium with other heavy metals breathed into lungs day-after-day so western citizens can feel good about their Tesla or wind turbine. Cobalt ore is sent to China since one of the larger mines in the Congo is Chinese-owned Congo Dongfang International Mining Company.”
This is just a sample of the injustices to meet current raw material requirements for wind and solar power. Stein and Royal write, “Try to picture the raw material demands, Third World mining and child labor conditions, and ecological destruction, under the humongous demands of the Green New Deal.”
Join us for this week’s episode of The Other Side of the Story to learn what renewable energy companies are not telling you about the source of the raw materials needed to create their products.
