Thomas Jefferson said, “if a nation expects to be ignorant and free . . . it expects what never was and never will be.” Americans turned over the education of their children to government actors decades ago, wanting to make sure that everyone had access to a basic education. Over time, however, government schools have become less about educating children and more about turning them into people who will follow directions and do what they’re told. What happens when the American people are ignorant of basic civics, their rights, and their responsibilities?
