Like the boy who cried wolf, we tend to lose trust in institutions that have problems. Recent polls show that many Americans have lost trust in several of our institutions. When I see what has been happening in our elections in the 21st century, culminating in the debacle that was the 2020 election, I can understand why people are less likely to trust them. But what happens when the American people can no longer trust the elections we use to choose servants to represent us, to exercise our sovereign power in our name? It’s not so much that we have problems in our elections, it’s how we deal with those problems that concern me, and I believe many others as well.
Today, I want to take a look at how a few of the states have gone about rectifying the problems the 2020 elections brought front and center to the minds of many Americans. Then, I want to ask that question, what happens if we can’t trust that our elections are free, fair, and open?
