No one disputes that at current rates, the burning of fossil fuels introduces 33 billion tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere every year. Climate Change advocates argue that the emission of this greenhouse gas is destroying the planet due to global warming. They would have you believe that humans control atmospheric CO2 levels and that fossil fuel emissions have driven CO2 concentrations higher than they have ever been. Under President Obama, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) went so far as to classify CO2 as a toxic pollutant in order to close all coal fired power plants in the United States.

They do not want anyone to bring up the geological history of the Earth, but instead simply focus on just the last 100 years of the Earth’s 4.6 billion year history. The reason of course is that the geologic record does not support their belief that carbon dioxide controls the Earth’s climate. Surprising to most is that the current level of CO2 in the atmosphere, (410 parts per million (PPM) is but .04% of all molecules of gas which amounts to about one molecule in 2500. It surely does not present a health risk. Our atomic submarines which stay submerged months at a time contain an average of 5000 parts per million in their air.

The geologic record, involving an analysis of the abundance of carbonate minerals, coal, and oil deposits and fossils throughout its history reveals that carbon dioxide has always been in the earths’s atmosphere in much greater levels than today. 600 million years ago when the greatest explosion of new animal species occurred, CO2 concentrations exceeded 6500 ppm, 17 times more than today.

The geologic record is important because it reveals actual relationships between carbon dioxide levels, climate and life on Earth. It clearly proves that CO2 concentrations do not control the Earth’s temperature and that the increase of 120ppm CO2 did not cause the increase in the Earth’s temperature since the little ice age ended when General Washington’s troops were freezing at Valley Forge.

Over billions of years the geologic record clearly shows that there is no long term correlation between atmospheric CO2 levels and the Earth’s climate. There are periods in the Earth;’s History when CO2 concentrations were many times higher than they are today, yet temperatures were identical to or even colder than modern times. The claim that fossil fuel emissions control atmospheric C02 concentrations is also invalid as they have gone up and done with no input from mankind.

The absurdity of climate alarmist claims get even stranger when you consider that there are 7.5 billion people on our planet exhaling in total about 2.7 billion tons of CO2 each year, almost 10% of our fossil fuel emissions each year. However we are but a single species. All managed livestock in the world is estimated to emit 4 billion tons. Counting people plus all domesticated animals, radical environmentalists vilify humans for contributing 10 billion tons to the fossil fuel total estimated at 33 billion tons per year.

However over 90% of the CO2 emissions from all living things arise not from animals, but from anaerobic bacteria and fungi. These organisms metabolize dead plant and animal matter in soil via decay processes that recycle CO2 back into the atmosphere. The grand total for the CO2 produced by all living things is estimated to be 440 billion tons per year or 13 times the CO2 currently being produced by fossil fuel emissions. Fossil fuel emissions represent 8% of biological emissions.
