The period after the fall of Rome is frequently referred to as the Dark Ages and is characterized by economic, intellectual, and cultural decline. As we stare into the abyss of a new recession that some say will grow into a depression, the collapse of the scientific method, and the intentional debasement of our culture, especially our children, could America and the world be entering a New Dark Age?
Benjamin Franklin, writing as Silence Dogood, wrote: “Without Freedom of Thought, there can be no such Thing as Wisdom; and no such Thing as publick (sic) Liberty, without Freedom of Speech;” Yet freedom of speech and thought is under attack. Recent evidence from both the Twitter Files and Disinformation, Inc., not to mention the multiple examples of “cancel culture,” shows the suppression of speech in an attempt to suppress freedom of thought.
In his first inaugural address, George Washington said: “And since the preservation of the sacred fire of liberty, and the destiny of the Republican model of Government, are justly considered as deeply, perhaps as finally staked, on the experiment entrusted to the hands of the American people.” Will the American people allow the sacred fire of liberty to go out? Will the American people fail in this experiment in self-government? Will we rage against the dying of the light, or simply ask the last free person to turn them off?
