COVID Altered Her Life and Lead Her Into Politics
Dr. Devi Nampiaparampil, known as Dr. Devi, joins “After Dark” to talk about COVID-19 and why she is running to be New York City’s next Public Advocate. The doctor, who has spent the last 20 years administering healthcare to the sick, says she decided to run for public office after her husband and toddler contracted the virus while she was pregnant and trying to run her private medical practice. Things became dire for her when her husband started hallucinating, was hospitalized, and was near death. Unfortunately, she had to send her toddler to live with relatives in upstate New York after the city threatened to take the child away. However, she was able to bounce back, and it was during this time she realized how fragile and unprepared the government is in assisting individuals in moments of crisis. She blames this on mismanagement and bureaucracy within the city’s government.
The doctor said things have to change, and it is the role of the public advocate to look at the city agencies⏤programs and to acknowledge the good but also point out the deficits and ways to make things better for citizens. Looking back on the past 18 months, she realized she could be best effective in lending her voice and knowledge to make things better for the people of New York City.
The doctor is in on “After Dark with Rob and Andrew,” and she is ready to give her diagnosis.
