Crime is up all across the nation, and not just petty crime but also violent crime. According to the New York City Department, crime spiked nearly 60% in February 2022 compared to the same month in 2021. The City recorded a 41% increase in overall major crime during the first months of 2022 compared to the same period last year, including a nearly 54% increase in robberies, a 56% increase in grand larceny incidents, and a 22% increase in rape reports. Politicians like to blame COVID-19 lockdowns for the increase in crime across the nation, but that provides little solace to anyone when they are being asked to leave the safety of their homes and venture back into society.

As the crime numbers worsen, New York City’s Mayor Eric Adams has even asked New Yorkers to leave their home offices and take the subway and get back to work. Needless to say, his request isn’t sitting too well with many people who are looking at the increased crime numbers. Not only that, the hosts of “After Dark” caution people to enter back into society at their own peril, for the crime numbers are jarring.

Dr. Devi Nampiaparampil, a native New Yorker, joins the hosts to talk about crime in the City. She recently had her own encounter with the City’s criminal element when riding the subway. While she wasn’t physically harmed, the encounter left her questioning the City’s policies and approach to handling crime. Both she and the hosts feel that it seems criminals have more rights than law-abiding citizens. In addition to speaking about crime, the doctor also weighs on the nation’s relaxed approach to COVID and wearing masks.

Dr. Devi Elizabeth Nampiaparampil has been a New York City physician for 20 years and is board certified in pain, sports, physical/ rehabilitation, and hospice and palliative medicines. She has degrees from Harvard and Columbia universities and is an Associate Professor at NYU School of Medicine. Dr. Devi has worked on behalf of veterans, victims of violence and trauma, rape victims, survivors of domestic abuse, the disabled, the medically fragile, refugees, and the homeless. She has appeared as an on-air medical analyst in over 500 news segments for Fox News, CNN, MSNBC, CNBC, NBC News, ITV, and other national and international networks. She and her husband currently live in New York City, rearing their two children.
