A few days into the new year, we see the Republican Congress mired in epic-proportions controversy. Republicans, who control the House, can’t find a leader. Well, technically, it’s not that they can’t find a leader. Some Republicans have a leader in mind, Kevin McCarthy of California, but he can’t get the votes from his peers to be elected as the leader of the 118th Congress.

McCarthy, who is the heir apparent, previously served as the House Minority Leader in the United States Congress from 2019 to 2023. Because he was successful in winning back the House from Democrats in what was a close 2022 election, many assumed he would step right into the role having the support of his party. But that isn’t happening, for he can’t get the magic number 218 to win the Speakership.

Interestingly, he is the only member of his immediate family who is a Republican. Becoming Speaker of the House has long been a dream for Kevin McCarthy.

Some would argue that he has supported conservative principles throughout his political career. But that argument is at the center of the debate. A cadre of about twenty doesn’t see McCarthy as conservative enough. He has been a strong defender of former President Donald Trump. Indeed, these credentials would give him access to House Speaker. Right?

Remember when McCarthy was recorded on tape telling Liz Cheney something along the lines of Trump needing to resign as president following the 2021 January 6 kerfuffle at the nation’s Capitol? Not an indication of a strong leader to take the sides of Democrats, who cooked up the Jan 6 “Red Scare.” Then there was the matter of McCarthy being unable to coalesce members to vote against Joe Biden’s radical and destructive Omnibus bill.

Is he really committed to getting to the bottom of the FBI, CIA Twitter files, and Dr. Fauci’s COVID scare?

Democracy at Play or Republican Meltdown?
