For the last few years, we’ve all heard about threats to America’s democracy. Yes, the United States of America is a republic, not a democracy. But let’s focus on the underlying assumption of this statement. That the policies that are being protested threaten the basis of self-government that this nation was founded on.
Like the character Vizzini in The Princess Bride, it seems that not everything alleged to be a threat to democracy, actually is. In fact, when I hear most people talk about threats to America’s democracy, the only response that seems to make sense is, “You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.”
