Few of our readers will get an opportunity to sit down and chat with Greenpeace co-founder Dr. Patrick Moore as we have. But sitting down with his new book FAKE INVISIBLE CATASTROPHES AND THREATS OF DOOM might feel just like you had that experience.

Patrick’s original intention in forming Greenpeace was to promote environmental protection and peace among nations. The groups started when, in 1971, he and 11 other activists sailed north from Vancouver in an attempt to stop the underground testing of a 5-megaton hydrogen bomb testing that was about to happen at Amchitka Island in Alaska. While they were unable to stop the test, they did bring the issue to wide public attention resulting in the Canadian government voting to condemn nuclear tests. President Richard Nixon canceled the remaining hydrogen bomb tests planned for Amchitka in early 1972.

Patrick again sailed with his fellow Greenpeace activists in 1975 during their first campaign to save whales onboard the ship Rainbow Warrior. When they met the Soviet whaling fleet off the coast of California, film footage was caught of the Soviets firing a harpoon over the heads of the Greenpeacers in an inflatable boat and into the back of a female sperm whale. The next day, that video was shown on the evening news on all three U.S. national networks. Thus, Greenpeace made its debut on the world media stage, leading to a swift rise in public support for the organization. Moore, piloting a Greenpeace raft, approaches Soviet whaling ships in 1975.

Unfortunately, a number of years after the formation of Greenpeace, the group was taken over by radical leftists no longer fighting for the good of our environment and world peace but rather fighting to obstruct all capitalist efforts and install Marxist views wherever possible.

As a consequence, Patrick left the group and has spent the rest of his career speaking, writing, and consulting on environmental issues near and dear to his heart. With a Ph.D. in Ecology, coupled with superb public relations and communications skills, he is well equipped to counter the insipid lies spread continuously by radical environmentalists, many of whom care not a whit for the environment but rather hate seeing people’s standard of living enhanced through capitalist efforts. We are indeed fortunate to have someone on our side of the debate that has such a unique ability to dive into the weeds on complex topics and give his audiences a basic understanding of environmental issues.

In the past few years, Patrick has worked to set the record straight on a variety of issues, including the fraudulent claims of human-caused climate change, dying trees in Africa, the death of the Great Barrier Reef, Polar Bear declines, species extinction, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, Genetically Modified Food, nuclear radiation, forest fires, and ocean acidification among others. He considers the push to quickly phase out all fossil fuel consumption the greatest threat to civilization in the world today. In his book, FAKE INVISIBLE CATASTROPHES AND THREATS OF DOOM, Patrick gives readers common sense ways to convince their friends of the absurdity of our new administration’s effort to convince Americans to give up our freedoms in order to “save the world.”  He deals with 19 separate crazy predictions laid at the feet of climate change, skewering each and every one with excellent technical references.

Patrick lectures on the supposedly dying Great Barrier Reef, showing that it is doing just fine. He has first-hand experience with reefs snorkeling off the Baja coast of Mexico at his winter home. He explains that the so-called bleaching is the result of one form of plankton leaving the reef, and their color along with them, due to changes in environmental conditions. For a period, the reefs appear white until a new species of plankton moves in.

He makes light of the fact that corals evolved and survived for 225 million years when the climate was considerably warmer than now. While the alarmists insist a warmer Earth is detrimental, he explains that the warmest seas in the Indonesian Archipelago, which includes the Philippines and Solomon Islands, known as the Coral Triangle, are home to the world’s greatest diversity of coral reefs.

Growing up in a remote logging and fishing village in British Columbia and working with Harp Seals in his early years, Patrick recognizes that Polar Bear populations have increased dramatically over the past half-century. He explains that this is largely due to an international treaty signed in 1973 by all polar countries that outlawed the unrestricted hunting of these beautiful but deadly animals. He told us the sad story of the attacks on Dr. Susan Crockford, an internationally renowned polar bear expert, who has been vilified by the left for bringing the truth to the world about the health of the current Polar Bear population. They recognized that Dr. Crockford was undermining their dishonest efforts to use the bear as a symbol of human-caused global warming.

Few of us really understand species extinction and the extent of lies told by the left of the millions of life forms being eliminated from our Earth. Patrick tells us that there are fewer than two million species on Earth that have been identified, named, and characterized. This includes a million insects, about half of which are beetles, 45,000 spiders, 30,250 other vertebrates—including shellfish, corals, nudibranchs (soft-bodied, marine mollusks which shed their shells following the larval stage), worms, etc.—310,801 species of plants, 48,496 species of lichens and mushrooms and 66,178 species of vertebrates including 34,000 fish, 7,302 amphibians, 10,038 reptiles, 10,425 birds and about 5,513 mammals like us. You can imagine how absurd it has been for biology alarmists to weave their tales of misery for so many creatures of which they know almost nothing. As is typical in so much of the climate alarmist movement, they use mathematical models to promote their lies.

The hoax of the Pacific Garbage Patch said to be full of discarded plastic and twice the size of Texas is one of Patrick’s favorite subjects. In fact, it is nothing more than made-up photoshopped pictures, and others taken from different events such as the garbage that washed offshore after the tsunami that killed nearly 20,000 people and caused the nuclear incident at Fukushima, Japan.

Perhaps more than any story, it illustrates the lengths to which these misguided activists will go to undermine society as we know it. Patrick explains that because plastics are made with petroleum, the anti-plastic movement finds it an easy case to make. While he does emphasize that discarded plastic has harmed some wildlife and fish, he explains that it is also beneficial to many species of marine life and birds. For example, bits of hard plastic is ingested by seabirds for use as digestive aids in the birds’ gizzards to grind their food, similar to land birds ingesting small pebbles for the same purpose. Other benefits for marine species include using attaching their eggs to floating plastic and using floating plastic as a habitat for shellfish such as barnacles and scallops, in the same manner, that many marine species make use of driftwood in the sea. He points out that plastic is not toxic, harms no one, and has huge benefits to the modern world, such as packaging most of our food to keep it from being contaminated.

Despite the left’s efforts to eliminate advanced technology in agriculture, we have discussed with Patrick the fact that the world’s food supply has continued to increase and reduce all forms of malnutrition. In particular, genetic modification has allowed huge improvements in our food production. We can now grow crops under high heat and low moisture conditions and have increased yields for many of our important grains as a result. All of this, however, has been achieved against a backdrop of decades of anti-GMO forces spreading lies to the public regarding the lack of safety of such improvements. The most dramatic case that Patrick described to us was the decades-long effort to thwart the reduction in childhood death and blindness through the use of “Golden Rice.” This genetically modified rice contains beta carotene, the precursor to Vitamin A, whose deficiency brings on mortality and blindness among children. Patrick is frustrated that, after 25 years of genetically modified organisms of many types being grown and eaten around the world in billions of meals with not been a single verified case of harm, anti-GMO activists continue their drumbeat of doom and gloom.

Besides dispelling the myths of radioactive dangers from nuclear power plants, Patrick, trained in forestry, also enjoys foiling the absurd claims directed at forest fires as being caused by global warming. In fact, both warming and rising carbon dioxide increase soil moisture levels and so decrease the risk of fires!
