From the time we are small children, we are taught the universal number to call if there was an emergency. You can ask anyone in the nation, even as young as a one-year-old, what to do if you are in trouble. Have you ever had to dial 911? For a loved one, close friend, or maybe even a stranger? What if you called 911 for help and no one arrived? This is the reality we face if we don’t recognize the crisis surrounding the first responder profession.
We hear on a nearly daily basis of the nurse shortage. You may have even heard of the doctor or police officer shortage we are facing. With the rapid rise of diseases and crime, it is no wonder we are incentivizing young adults to join these professions. But the profession that is often overlooked is the one that answers to the medical or trauma emergencies in the emergency medical responder position.
Today we are diving into the shortage and why this shortage is happening. We will be speaking with Joseph Au, the owner, and director of Granite Mountain Training (GMT) located in Prescott, Arizona. He is a paramedic for over a decade, and not only started his own nonprofit (GMT), to combat our current EMT and paramedic crisis, but also continues to serve his community by working for the local ambulance company. Joseph will be giving his perspective on why we are seeing such a drastic decline in a profession that used to be held in such high regard for decades.
