There are many variations on this truth, but it is still true. Act in haste, repent at leisure. It’s true when you’re building something, when you’re cooking, and especially when you’re making public policy.
There are plenty of examples of people’s haste in making public policy turn out to be a waste of time, money, and liberty. We’ve seen it in dealing with criminal behavior, ignoring little infringements on our rights, and following the latest fads. So why do we still do it? Why do we rush after the latest thing while devoting little time to considering the consequences? I believe there are several reasons based on human nature, psychology, and greed. Ultimately, many of the problems we suffer today arose out of our unwillingness to remember “Fools rush in where angels fear to tread.”
