Free College and The $20 Big Mac
When you listen to prominent leftists talking about wealth – and it does not matter which leftist you choose – they always talk about wealth using passive verbs. To the left, wealth ‘goes to’ specific individuals, and they speak of this as if wealth were but rain falling from the sky, unfairly landing more in some neighborhoods than others.
Ironically, where this is true – where wealth acquisition is passive – is entirely based on policies that leftists have sponsored. Leftists call for regulating a given industry. Before you know it, the biggest players in that industry are bribing regulators (and legislators) to give them unfair and unearned advantages elevating them above any possible competition.
Consider that the only business venture Elon Musk has that was not paid for primarily through tax dollars is PayPal. Tesla, SpaceX – all of his other ventures exist for the government to take your income and give it to Elon Musk. His billions came primarily from your paycheck.
Government corruption and welfare are the only two forms of passive income out there, and both are caused by the very people who complain about inequality in wealth. Yet, the people the left attacks are not those who benefit from their policies, even though those are the ONLY PEOPLE for whom wealth is passive.
In most cases, wealth is active, which is to say that people EARNED it.
By treating all wealth as passive, government pretends to have a moral obligation to control its distribution, with leftists being utterly ignorant about how that wealth was created in the first place. Even the passive (corrupt) wealth the left gives out had to first have been earned by someone – otherwise, it would not exist for the government to seize.
The problem is that the more the nation (or any nation) treats wealth as passive, the less incentive there is to earn it. Until the brilliance of Bernie Sanders figures out a way to distribute that which is not produced – until wealth truly does fall like Manna from Heaven – all his policies will do is to disincentivize creating it in the first place.
Government is like a toilet. It sucks all the water down through the bottom, expecting that the bowl will be refilled. Leftists seem to think that all it takes to make a nation rich is to flush more often, never understanding that their policies choke off the supply of water coming into the bowl.
Eventually, the leftist flushes, and nothing happens – there is no water to refill the bowl.
And then we starve.
This is not a new story. We have seen this exact same story play out countless times in the past, with the most recent example being Venezuela – a country leftists touted as a success story just a few years ago.
Many of the people running our country are absolute idiots. Bernie Sanders, for example, recently said that two Democrats should not be able to stop a bill all of the other Democrats want. Bernie is pretending that 48 Senators is a majority – completely ignoring the fact that 50 Senators are Republicans, every one of whom understands that spending five and a half-trillion dollars we don’t have, while inflation is already running rampant, is a recipe for disaster.
Bernie Sanders can’t even count.
Joe Biden cannot tie his shoelaces, and his administration cannot seem to get out of its own way, even with a media that fawns over him as if he were the Second Coming of Christ. With store shelves running bare, Jen Psaki actually had the nerve to tell the American people that we are a bunch of spoiled children who need to ‘grow up’ and ‘lower your expectations.’
Ilhan Omar called for the complete dismantling of Minneapolis’ police department, and essentially got her wish. Now with Minneapolis and other Democrat-controlled cities having taken her advice, crime and murder are skyrocketing, and Ilhan Omar’s solution is to blame the police she does not want to have for not doing their jobs, after she largely got rid of them.
And don’t get me started on AOC. She’s so stupid that she does not even know how stupid she is. AOC thinks AOL is an acronym for her laughing.
We are headed for a New World Order where college will be ‘free,’ but it’ll be $20 for a Big Mac, $10 for a gallon of gas, and it will cost $1,000 per month to heat your house in the winter. On top of that, you will have to pay 60% of your income for that ‘free’ college, making you glad it is ‘free,’ and making you sorry that nobody can afford a Big Mac anymore.
In this world of ‘free’ college, you won’t be able to go to college, because the demand to get in will be too high. There will not be anywhere near enough seats to cover that demand, but you’ll still get to pay taxes so that other people can go, and the people who go will be those whose parents have enough money to bribe their way in.
The Democrats have already created a country where if you immigrate illegally, you get free food, free housing, free college, and free medical care, but where if you immigrate LEGALLY, not only don’t you get those free things, but you have to pay taxes to provide other people who also immigrated, but who broke the law doing it, with those things.
Rather than equal treatment under the law, Democrats are openly calling for unequal treatment under the law, such that we can have equal outcomes.
The Pentagon recently had a celebratory press conference, where it announced that Richard Levine is the first female Four-Star Admiral in our nation’s history. Apparently, we are so free as a people that the first woman to do something can now be a man.
And here is the thing about ‘free’ healthcare. Let’s say you had cancer, and you had two choices. One choice was to use a system that was rationed by the price mechanism. In that system, you would get the best medical treatments possible, and would have a 90% chance of beating the cancer and living a full life, but it would bankrupt you (even with your medical insurance), and affect your credit for seven years.
The other system is paid for through taxes, and is ‘free’ to use, but it is also government rationed and supply-constrained (with far more demand for medical care than the government can afford to provide). In this system, you will pay nothing out of pocket for your medical care, but you will be treated as a terminal patient, and will die in somewhere between six months and two years.
‘Free’ means you will not pay for something, but it does not mean you will ever receive that thing. Too often, when government acts to make things’ free,’ the people go without. This is exactly what happened in Venezuela.
My friends – we are a lot closer to collapse than you think. Wealth is created through active processes; it is earned. Some earn a great deal. Others perform tasks that society finds less valuable and earn less. But in a healthy economy, people EARN their wealth.
We are not doing that anymore, and I am afraid that if these two new leftist packages pass (the infrastructure bill and the ‘reconciliation’ package), we will find all of our true productive capacity has been flushed down the toilet.
And then what?
