We dedicate this issue of the Report to information about how plants in the food chain are being directly modified to survive herbicide which is widely applied to get rid of competing weeds. Our guest, Steve Smith, will take us through this complicated set of terminology and help us understand what it all means. With his permission, I have adapted this information from his website Institute for Responsible Technology.

What is a GMO? GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organism. We can also use genetically modified or genetically engineered.

How are GMOs created? Typically, scientists transfer genes from one species (like bacteria or viruses) and force them into the DNA of other species (like soybeans or corn.) Alternatively, instead of transferring genes, gene-editing equipment rearranges genes in the sequence, takes genes out, etc. It’s all artificial changes in the DNA done in a laboratory.

Let’s go over a little of the history of how GMOs were introduced. Monsanto is a big GMO producer, AND they sell Roundup herbicide. They had a patent on glyphosate- the chief poison in Roundup -, that was expiring in the year 2000. So, they genetically engineered crops to withstand the herbicide Roundup. These are called Roundup-ready crops, and they comprise more than 80% of all GMOs. They are engineered so that farmers can spray Roundup over the top of the field of corn or soy, and it will kill the weeds but not the crops. Normally, the Roundup would kill those crops, but the Roundup-Ready crops survive.

Soy, corn, cotton, canola, sugar beets, and alfalfa, are genetically modified as Roundup-ready. Over 90% of those crops (except for alfalfa) in North America and in many places around the world, are Roundup-ready crops.

Corn, cotton, and in South America, soy, are also engineered to produce a toxin that’s an insecticide called Bt. It’s named for the bacterium (Bacillus thuringiensis.) that produces this toxin naturally. This toxin kills certain insects by breaking open their guts and killing them. Engineers take the gene from the bacteria (Bt) and make millions of copies and transfect plants with it.

And again, in all these cases, collateral damage occurs as a result. That’s different than the practice of traditional breeding via sexual reproduction.

In addition to herbicide-tolerant crops and the Bt crops, there’s also papaya from Hawaii or China, as well as zucchini and yellow squash. Because they have a certain gene inserted, it is unlikely for them to get a certain disease.

There’s also a non-browning apple and potato, where the sliced apple or potato won’t turn brown. These may be the most dangerous—Mr. Smith explains why.

Lastly, genetically engineered, fast-growing salmon is currently for sale in Canada, and perhaps soon in the United States as well. The trouble we will all have is will be discerning what is genetically altered in the grocery store.

Steve makes an impressive case to buy “organic” and seek foods that are free of GMOs. This is important as we anticipate a future struggle over transparency legislation and labeling as more and more genetic techniques are used in farming.

Dr. McCullough is an internist, cardiologist, and epidemiologist managing the cardiovascular complications of both the viral infection and the injuries developing after the COVID-19 vaccine in Dallas, TX, USA. Since the outset of the pandemic, Dr. McCullough has been a leader in the medical response to the COVID-19 disaster and has published “Pathophysiological Basis and Rationale for Early Outpatient Treatment of SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) Infection,” the first synthesis of sequenced multidrug treatment of ambulatory patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 in the American Journal of Medicine and subsequently updated in Reviews in Cardiovascular Medicine. He has dozens of peer-reviewed publications on the infection and has extensively commented on the medical response to the COVID-19 crisis in TheHill, America Out Loud, NewsMax, One America News, Victory Channel, NTD, and FOX NEWS Channel. Dr. McCullough has testified on pandemic response multiple times in the US Senate, Texas Senate Committee on Health and Human Services, Arizona Senate, Colorado General Assembly, New Hampshire Senate, Pennsylvania Senate, and South Carolina Senate. On December 7, 2022, Dr. McCullough co-moderated a Senate Panel and concluded that all COVID-19 vaccines should be removed from the market for excess mortality. Dr. McCullough has reviewed thousands of reports, participated in scientific congresses, group discussions, and press releases, and has been considered among the world's top experts on COVID-19.

I love Aldi. Maybe because I’m German but they have the best prices and the quality in general are good. Since labels have to point out nowadays if some of the ingredients are bioengineered or not I gave up some of their product lines line CLANCY. Often however it would just say “Contains soy…” Does that mean it’s pointed out because it may be GMO? Soy is one of the crops that had been engineered. So instead of using the word bioengineered they just single out an ingredient that most likely is too? They do the same thing if it has nuts but that’s because some do have an allergy caused by nuts.

I’ve been writing about GMO’s for many years and this piece is simply wrong. He claims there is “as usual collateral damage” for the use of BT, but fails to say what that damage is. However, there has been very real, very documented damage perpetrated on humanity by these green misfits due to their resistance to GMO’s, especially Golden Rice, which could have saved millions of lives in Asia by adding Vitamin A to their diet.

You need to seriously reevaluate your views on this issue, and while I agree totally on these false vaccines that are nothing more than gene altering compounds that havn’t been property tested, when properly tested, there have been grand advances in medicine by gene editing. – https://geneticliteracyproject.org/2018/02/07/gene-editing-revolution-medicine/?mc_cid=1720a27e13&mc_eid=1f8a6a4f03

GMO’s Are Not the Problem. They’re the Answer! – https://paradigmsanddemographics.blogspot.com/2019/09/gmos-are-not-problem-theyre-answer.html

Not only is GMO resistance unscientific and irrational, it’s immoral.

It’s incredible the level of stupidity that’s out there that doesn’t recognize that these big companies create problems so they can make huge dollars on the providing the so-called solution.

Can’t we work towards getting people in need access to crops that have high levels of vitamin A – such as sweet potatoes, carrots, mangoes, plantains, and whatever other high vitamin A foods grow in their region?

Dr. McCullough, I’m a big fan, follow and trust you completely regarding Covid and many other thoughts you have. I have to be the first to tell you that you got completely rolled by this huckster selling his anti GMO, organic, anti Glyphosate agenda. I listened to the entire interview and kept saying oh my god what a fraud, certainly this is a joke and McCullough is going to call him out because this is complete malarkey. But you bought it all hook line and sinker. We’re there any diseases on earth that couldn’t be cured by simply stopping all GMO and glyphosate consumption, and going organic? I think he claims to have found the cure for about everything, then directed your audience to his propaganda filled website selling snake oil. This was so disappointing. You should know better Dr., didn’t you get any weird feelings when he made statement after statement that sounded way too good to be true. Your audience was done a very huge disservice by letting this guy rant without any resistance or counter arguments at all. This is exactly what you dislike about big pharma, in reverse.

Our farm is certified organic, you are welcome to pay us a visit and observe the high quality of our soil vs our GMO neighbours. We are feeding the micro-organisms in the soil, our neighbours are killing them. Round up does act to chelate the minerals in the soil lowering fertility. I have seen time and time again farmers in our area of Ontario spray their crops before harvest to desiccate them. Within hours their field of green wheat or beans for example, turns brown. I avoid round up and GMO’s like the plague. Unfortunately farm fences can not prevent cross pollination so in years when our neighbour has grown soybeans and so have we, his GMO crops have contaminated ours. Monsanto’s power and influence $$$ has so much in common with Moderna & Pfizer. Raising awareness through great interviews like this one is a great step in the right direction to defeating their fraud, deception and toxicity. Many thanks. I am sharing this widely.
