We’ve all heard the “slippery slope” argument, and people dismiss it as irrelevant. But instinctively, we know that when people are not punished for their bad behavior, or worse, are rewarded for it, they will do it again. What happens when the people in question are our elected representatives?

For decades people have been asking the federal government to do what it is not legally allowed to, and then acted surprised as it grew. We voted for people who promised the government would pay for what we want, then complained about the deficits. And for everyone who said we should just do what the experts in Washington, D.C., tell us to do only to find out they were wrong and We the People, are paying the price, I want to say, “I told you so.”

I guess the old adage, “Give them an inch, and they’ll take a mile.” applies to politicians as well. When will the American people learn that lesson?

The Constitution Study with Paul Engel on America Out Loud Talk Radio can be heard weekdays at 4 pm ET. Listen on iHeart Radio, our world-class media player, or our free apps on AppleAndroid, or Alexa. Listen to other episodes of The Constitution Study, available on podcast.
