Public schools had an honorable start in the republic. First, people taught their children at home. Then communities would get together, build a schoolhouse and hire a teacher. Then it was agreed that it was a public responsibility to ensure every child had a basic education, the chance to learn to read, write, do basic math, and basic civics.
It was agreed that public taxes would be used to build and operate local schools, overseen by the parents, to ensure every child had this opportunity.
Somewhere along the line, things have gone horribly wrong.
Before we can decide how to react to the problem, we have to identify what the problem is.
Next, we have to decide what we want public education to be. Only then may we figure out what to do next.
