Veterans Day, formally known as Armistice Day, observed annually on November 11, is a tribute to American military veterans who have served in the United States Armed Forces. In honor of Veterans Day, the hosts of “After Dark” welcome journalist Heather Robinson to the show to discuss her recent article on World War II veterans titled “Wisdom Of Heroes.”
“Initially, Robinson said her story started as a small article to recognize soldiers around Independence Day, but it grew to something larger and more meaningful. It took her nearly three months to complete. After much research, she interviewed a diverse group of soldiers, including men, women (who weren’t recognized as soldiers during WWII, blacks, and Native Americans. Many of them were in their 90’s or were 100 years of age. And while many of the soldiers spoke about the adversity they encountered while serving (racism, segregation, and sexism), a common theme they all shared was unity and love for America. After interviewing them and listening to their stories, Robinson said she now understands why they are called the “Greatest Generation.”
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2019, there were more than 18 million veterans in the United States. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs statistics identifies 240,329 of the 16 million Americans who served in World War II are alive in 2021.
