Have you ever disagreed with someone and questioned what was between their ears? I see it all the time, especially in the questions and comments I get from the radio show and my articles. I don’t mean people I simply disagree with, but where it seems basic logic and reason do not enter their consideration. Recently, someone pointed me to an excerpt of a letter from Friedrich Bonhoeffer that explained so many of my encounters that I had to share it with you. The piece is called “Theory of Stupidity.”
For those who do not remember or were never taught about Heir Bonhoeffer, he was a Lutheran pastor, theologian, and anti-Nazi leader in Nazi Germany. The latter led to his imprisonment in a concentration camp, where he was executed mere weeks before his camp was liberated.
From the observations of this Christian dissident in Nazi Germany, I think we can see far too many parallels to America today. After a look at some of the high points of this letter on stupidity, I want to explore some of the arguments today to answer what I believe is a very important question. Are we dealing with ignorance, malice, or mere stupidity?
