Anyone who has been watching public discourse in America can see that our nation is divided. We’re divided along racial lines, and political lines, and we’re even divided along the idea of truth.
We’re watching as red states get redder while blue states get bluer. You might say that the United States of America has irreconcilable differences.
There are even those suggesting that we should have a national divorce. We tried that once, and it led to the deadliest war in our nation’s history. So is a national divorce in our future, and what can we do about it?
Let’s start where I think many of our divides come from, the incessant focus on where we differ while we ignore what makes us alike. Then we need to spend some time on the idea of living and letting others live as well.
Lastly, we should go back to the most powerful feature of the nation our Framers created, the power of federalism, that of the states taking care of domestic affairs while the federal government focuses on international issues.
