The devaluing of human life has come back with a vengeance. Wars, communist takeovers with the slaughter of millions, and urban slayings of innocent bystanders are obvious offenders. We learned in disbelief about the ancient Greek and Roman practice of leaving weak babies outside to die of exposure. We think that such an atrocity does not happen here, not now. Yet some of the current and proposed “reproductive rights” laws could allow infanticide up to 28 days after the birth of a child.
Sometimes the disrespect for life is more subtle. For example, for the sake of the environment, six states are proposing, and three states already allow human composting. The religion of Mother Earth supersedes human decency.
We are all going to die. But most human beings don’t want people to die before they are born or at the hands of government or corporate bureaucracies. In several states, Covid-positive patients were returned to their nursing homes to mingle with uninfected residents. This dismissive treatment laid bare our elders’ position on the medical care totem pole. This leaves one to wonder whether the bureaucrats are culling the herd to save Medicare dollars.
Physician-assisted suicide, unwritten direct-to-hospice policies, and outright euthanasia reflect the depths to which our morality of life and death has sunk. In the face of this challenging environment, we must always remember that life is precious and fleeting. Once gone, you can’t get it back.
