On this Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr holiday, many of his ideals hit home in this time of media-induced divisiveness. Contrary to the media hate fests, the vast majority of people are good to one another or, at the very least, civil. There are always outliers who are jerks. We have to learn to ignore them or call them out on their behavior if it is adversely affecting us. I don’t think it’s being a Pollyanna to think this way.

Our politicians have failed to show leadership and inspiration. Therefore, we have to live our best life in our own world – our family and friends first – as George Washington said, our family is our first government. Maybe by improving our own attitudes, we can keep up the pressure on our government to respect us as individual human beings, rather than members of favored or disfavored groups.

Let’s use today to think about recapturing our humanity with a little inspiration from MLK:

  • I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.
  • Intelligence plus character-that is the goal of true education.
  • I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality… I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word.
  • Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.

Yes, we have to refuse to be silent. The current culture war that seeks to keep our society at each other’s throats does matter. People are suddenly dumping friends. Students and adults are struggling with conditions like increased isolation, anxiety, and depression after hearing daily doses of negativity.

We all –- especially children — need ways to strengthen our most positive traits and deal with our negative emotions. We need to learn how do we learn to live in a space grounded in human dignity rather than fear.

We are fortunate to have someone who will share his views about establishing a society of individuals at peace within themselves and others.
