It’s a trope of pretty much every superhero movie and cartoon I’ve ever seen. Someone thinks they know better how to run the world, and is willing to do all sorts of horrible things to make it happen. But what happens when these megalomaniacs aren’t relegated to fiction but exercise actual power to impose their will on others? It reminds me of a William F. Buckley Jr. quote:
“I would rather be governed by the first 2000 people in the Manhattan phone book than the entire faculty of Harvard.”
Think about that for a moment. Are the educators at our elite universities less qualified to govern than the people randomly chosen from the phone book? Now look at Congress and the Presidency and ask yourself if these are truly the best 537 Americans we can find to exercise our powers in our name?
Would we be better off having the states choose their members of Congress randomly from their citizens? Are those who want to be masters of you simply petty tyrants trying to bully the American people into compliance?
