While most 17-year old boys are dreaming about fast cars, getting a driver’s license, and going on dates, David McGrath was joining the military to fight for his country.
McGrath, who is a veteran of the Afghanistan War, shares with after “After Dark” the feeling he had when joining the military. He joined shortly after September 11, 2001, when his sense of security was shaken. For him joining the military as an infantryman was one of the best decisions he ever made. “Wearing the colors of the country on my right shoulder” gave him a sense of pride. Unlike many youngsters today when he chose to join the military, he did so to fight for the freedom of the country he loves. He was aware of the dangers but knew he would be well trained for his mission.
David McGrath does not mince words when describing Lloyd Austin, Mark Milly, and what is called the “Military-Industrial Complex.” Austin and Milley, he said, are not bright generals and have no real connection to wars other than making money. The more boots on the ground for these generals, the more money they make. The military veteran, who was stationed in Kabul, said he isn’t surprised at how quickly the country failed. However, he is surprised at the failures of the Biden Administration that left 13 soldiers to die and Americans behind enemy lines along with Afghanistan partners who supported American soldiers.
