We can learn from the history of our innovation. Over one hundred years ago, the engineers of the Titanic believed they had designed an unsinkable ship. It was hailed as an engineering marvel and an achievement of human engineering. On April 14-15, 1912, it hit an iceberg and sank shortly after it was filled with water.

This was unthinkable. It was thought that 5 of 16 compartments would need to be breached in order to sink. When the Titanic sank, experts stated the iceberg must have punctured the compartments. It was not until many years later that the mystery of the Titanic was revealed. When divers were able to reach the wreck, scientists discovered the iceberg did not puncture the compartments. As they retrieved ship parts, they discovered it was low-quality steel and materials that caused the water to overtake the ship. They had separated on impact.

What can we learn in 2023 from human arrogance in the early 1900s?

Neil deGrasse Tyson recently appeared on the podcast circuit to tell people how well the mRNA vaccine was tested and made in late 2020. He claimed that the issue was variants. When asked about the over 16,000 doctors that dissented in signing against the CDC, he was dismissive and doubled down on his claims.

Arrogance has run amok. We live among parrots. “Safe and Effective,” “Trust the Science,” and “New Normal” are the human equivalent to “Polly wants a cracker.” When the mirror is held up to these individuals, they come up empty and grasping at straws over free thought. They are the crew of the Titanic. They boast of how great the ship is while unknowingly embarking on a deadly voyage.

And just like the Titanic, the people who will be harmed the most are the third class. About 80% of those in the third class perished. The vaccine injured are individuals from many social classes. However, society has now treated them with a blind eye and mentally left them in the cabin below while the ship evacuates “trusts” those with approved influence.

The allegory of the Titanic works so well because human arrogance has increased since the beginning of the pandemic. Whether it’s the vaccine, financial stimulus, or the acceptance of losing healthcare privacy, there is a lesson to be learned.

We are all going down with the ship. Who will be like the captain and drown in their own errors of arrogance?
