Protests Intensify in Iran  |   Protesters are paying with their lives. At least 30 people have been killed, according to rights groups and news reports. Hundreds have been injured. It has been a week since the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who fell into a coma after being detained by Iran’s “morality police.” But the anti-government protests she inspired are still raging across Iran. Demonstrators, many of them women, are burning hijabs and fighting back against police; they are tearing down posters and setting fire to billboards of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the country’s supreme leader. Iran is disrupting cellular service across the country, and imposing significant internet outages in the troubled regions reports the Washington Post.

Getting Wealthy in Congress – Trading Stocks  |  The Republican hoping to flip Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District said he wants to ban members of Congress from trading stocks. Republican Zach Nunn said he won’t trade stocks if elected and will support legislation to keep other lawmakers from doing so, KCCI8 Des Moines reports.

Largest fentanyl seizure in department history  |   Two men have been arrested in the largest single fentanyl bust in the history of the Phoenix Police Department, with the seizure of more than one million pills, authorities said Friday. Law enforcement agencies across the country are seeing bigger fentanyl seizures as drug cartels ramp up smuggling efforts to get the illicit drugs into the United States, says FOX News.

‘I’m not sure he’s going to escape jail’: could Trump’s legal woes prevent a 2024 run?  |  Donald Trump’s legal perils have become insurmountable and could snuff out the former US president’s hopes of an election-winning comeback, according to political analysts and legal experts. On Wednesday, Trump and three of his adult children were accused of lying to tax collectors, lenders and insurers in a “staggering” fraud scheme that routinely misstated the value of his properties to enrich themselves, The Guardian reports.

Biden says U.S. forces would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion  |  Asked in a CBS 60 Minutes interview broadcast on Sunday whether U.S. forces would defend the democratically governed island claimed by China, he replied: “Yes, if in fact, there was an unprecedented attack.” The United States has long stuck to a policy of “strategic ambiguity” and not making clear whether it would respond militarily to an attack on Taiwan. Why now? One-China policy. In the 60 Minutes interview, Biden reiterated the United States remained committed to a “one-China” policy in which Washington officially recognizes Beijing not Taipei, and said the United States was not encouraging Taiwanese independence, Reuters reports.

Ukraine war: Biden warns Putin not to use tactical nuclear weapons  |  With President Putin escalating the war with 300,000 troops called up, and telling the world that he is not afraid to use any and all weapons… US President Joe Biden has warned Russia not to use chemical or tactical nuclear weapons in the war in Ukraine. Speaking during an interview with CBS News, Mr Biden said such action would “change the face of war unlike anything since World War Two,” says BBC News.

War, Inflation Knock World Economy Off Balance  |  The global economy is sputtering and financial markets are flashing red, reflecting a sense on Wall Street that a sharper slowdown in worldwide economic activity is likely inevitable. The culprits are surging inflation, a robust central-bank response, anxious investors and the impact of Russia’s aggression in Ukraine. The U.S. economy has largely escaped the worst of these ills, but a rising dollar is punishing the rest of the world at a time when price increases in many places are already outpacing incomes, Wall Street Journal reports.

Remember When FBI Cared More About Bad Guys than Conservatives?  |  In a single week, less than two months before midterm elections, the FBI issued 40 subpoenas against former low and high-level Trump associates, including his election campaign strategist Boris Epshteyn, former New York Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik, and former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. Their sweep also seized the cellphones of several Trump-allied attorneys, including an in-house legal counsel Mike Roman; Jeffrey Clark, whom Trump had once considered installing as attorney general; and John Eastman, a former Chapman University School of Law dean.

Meanwhile, some rank-and-file FBI whistleblowers are accusing top bureau officials of pressuring agents to cook up domestic terrorist cases by tagging people as White supremacists to meet internal metric quotas that justify the creation of a new DOJ investigation unit. One anonymous agent told the Washington Times, “The demand for White supremacy” coming from FBI headquarters “vastly outstrips the supply of White supremacy.” You can be quite certain they’re not looking for Biden supporters.
