We have been here before and hoped to never have to hear another tragic story of a mother who killed her children at the behest of “voices” in her head. And yet here we are. A Boston mother, Lindsay Clancy, was arraigned from her hospital bed last week. She is being accused of murdering her three children by strangulation.

The prosecution made the argument that Lindsay Clancy, a labor and delivery nurse in Boston, was completely aware of her decision to kill her three young children on January 24, 2023, before a failed attempt at suicide which has now confined her to life as a paraplegic.

The prosecuting attorney unwittingly recounted heart-wrenching details surrounding the tragic events that make the case of a woman suffering from severe postpartum depression (PPD). In multiple descriptions taken from journal entries and meticulous notes kept by the defendant, she recounted classic signs of impending psychosis.

According to both attorneys, Lindsay had been under medical treatment for her symptoms of PPD and had voluntarily committed herself to a psychiatric hospital for additional treatment. Her symptoms were misdiagnosed and inadequately treated by multiple practitioners which led to the death of her three children, and her permanent disability.

The video of the arraignment shows Mrs. Clancy lying in her hospital bed with a cervical collar on and an ill-fitting surgical mask covering her face. The viewer is only able to see her eyes as she listens to the court proceedings, which laid out the charges and details of the event. It is unclear whether the purpose of the mask was part of the unscientific covid protection protocols in place in most hospitals across the country, or simply an attempt at hiding her facial expressions so the viewer was unable to make judgments on her reactions.

If it is the former, it is a fitting example of how the healthcare community no longer relies on evidence to base treatment recommendations, but rather unsupported claims of efficacy handed down from the “experts” who hold the purse strings. This will become an important detail to consider later.

What was apparent was the unnatural emptiness in her eyes. Her response was abnormal when considering the details being recounted in her hearing. One of the most emotionally difficult descriptions was the recounting of the 911 call when Mr. Clancy found his three children lying lifeless on the basement floor with exercise bands tied around their necks. A normal person would’ve been visibly affected by this gut-wrenching account, and although we were limited in seeing her expression due to the conveniently placed surgical mask, it was impossible to miss the lack of expression in her eyes. The response was reflective of someone whose been heavily medicated and lacks the ability to express emotion due to the effects of psychiatric drugs.

According to an ABC news report Lindsay’s defense attorney Reddington “alleged that she was ‘thoroughly destroyed’ by several medications – including Valium, Prozac, Klonopin, and Zoloft- which he claimed masked her symptoms rather than treated them.” Evidence throughout the family home showed signs of a loving mother who kept a wish vase with small pieces of paper that detailed Lindsay’s hopes for her children.

Anyone who has ever been on antidepressants can attest to the effect it has on your ability to feel emotion. Whether it is a feature or a flaw, it is an indisputable fact that many patients who’ve been on antidepressants feel apathetic.

McShane and Chuck share more details about Lindsay’s emotional state in their article.

Defense attorney Kevin Reddington said his client is paralyzed below the waist because of a spinal cord injury and a broken back and ribs she sustained during the attempted suicide. He said she remains under 24/7 suicide watch.

Shes extremely emotional. However, shes unable, and has been unable, to express any happiness or sadness or cry,” Reddington said.

But her emotions were muted even before the deaths, he said.

Reddington said that a month or two ago, Lindsay Clancy had said, I just wish that I could feel something.”

The Hidden Harms of Antidepressants:

What many people don’t know is that the healthcare industry has been misleading you to believe that pharmaceuticals that treat depression are far more safe and effective than they truly are. Following a large meta-analysis of previous studies for antidepressants, researchers were able to uncover a staggering amount of bias, manipulation of reported findings, and an unethical failure to report harms that occurred to patients during drug trials. Due to direct marketing to the medical profession and the public, Big Pharma has been able to control the “science” and lead people to believe in a theory lacking actual proof.

According to Diana Kwon, studies have shown that antidepressants have many severe risks and side effects, including suicidal ideation, and aggression which is what earned it a black box warning by the European Medical Association. Although hints about hostile behavior existed in the past, pharmaceutical companies were not presenting the full extent of serious harm in clinical study reports sent to the FDA and EMA. This unethical behavior has been well documented by investigators who were able to uncover evidence that led to historic fines against Purdue pharmaceutical company during the opioid crisis.

The following is an excerpt from an article by Nadya Swart where she relays the deception tactics used to manipulate the healthcare industry and the general population for decades;

“A new review released this week which found that depression is not necessarily caused by a chemical imbalance questions the steadfast beliefs that have formed the basis of the treatment of depression for decades. And Professor Colleen Aldous, a healthcare scientist at UKZNs College of Health Sciences, believes that Big Pharma was, and always has been, privy to the fact that the science supporting the link between depression and a chemical imbalance was tenuous, at best. The authors of the review implicate Big Pharma as being party to this decades-long deception by saying, “…it is possible that claims about serotonin made in some papers may reflect marketing techniques to maximize the profile of the serotonin theory.”  – Nadya Swart

…Ang et al. Cite the example of Pfizer’s Zoloft direct-to-consumer advertising campaign, which stated that “while the cause is not known, depression may be related to an imbalance of natural chemicals between nerve cells in the brain” and that “prescription Zoloft works to correct this imbalance” – a subtle conversion of a theoretical possibility into a fact that can be treated with a tablet.”

In another journal article from Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics, Pigott et al. relay their findings following the review of four meta-analyses of efficacy trials submitted to the FDA and analyzed STAR*D (Sequenced Treatment Alternatives to Relieve Depression), the largest antidepressant effectiveness trial ever conducted. The Results are as follows:

Meta-analyses of FDA trials suggest that antidepressants are only marginally efficacious compared to placebos and document profound publication bias that inflates their apparent efficacy. These meta-analyses also document a second form of bias in which researchers fail to report the negative results for the pre-specified primary outcome measure submitted to the FDA, while highlighting in published studies positive results from a secondary or even a new measure as though it was their primary measure of interest. The STAR*D analysis found that the effectiveness of antidepressant therapies was probably even lower than the modest one reported by the study authors, with an apparent progressively increasing dropout rate across each study phase. Conclusions: The reviewed findings argue for a reappraisal of the current recommended standard of care of depression.

During her argument, the prosecuting attorney focused on the meticulous notes and journal entries Lindsay made detailing her medication usage, recounting her feelings, concerns, actions taken, and responses from family and friends. She may believe that she painted a picture of a completely sane individual who knew exactly what she was doing and therefore couldn’t have been in a state of postpartum psychosis, however, I believe she had the opposite effect for those who are aware of the signs to look for.

According to a Postpartum Depression website, here are some of the mental symptoms of postpartum depression:

  • Inability to concentrate
  • Trouble remembering details
  • Difficulty making decisions
  • Doubting her ability to care for her baby
  • Thinking things are too overwhelming to handle
  • Thinking she has failed or is inadequate, feelings of worthlessness

Behavioral Symptoms of Postpartum Depression

  • Women suffering from postpartum depression also exhibit behavioral changes. It may seem like she is behaving like a different person.
  • Here are common behavioral symptoms of postpartum depression:
  • Acting distant with her partner
  • Withdrawing from loved ones and social activities
  • Inability to form a bond with the new baby
  • Unwilling to care for the baby out of fear of harming them
  • Not being able to enjoy time with friends and family members
  • Not wanting to be alone with the baby
  • Exhibiting angry behavior toward others

Symptoms of Obsession, Panic, and Trauma

Women with severe cases of postpartum depression may experience a combination of obsessive, anxious, and traumatic behaviors. These extreme symptoms may include:

  • Severe and debilitating anxiety and agitation
  • Recurring panic attacks (i.e., shortness of breath, chest tightening, and heart palpitations)
  • Fears of dying, losing control, or going crazy
  • Displaying repetitive obsessions such as bathing the baby and changing their clothes
  • Intrusive thoughts of harming or killing the baby
  • Feeling horrified and embarrassed by these thoughts

The woman is aware of her thoughts and behaviors with all types of postpartum depression except postpartum psychosis. Therefore, her acting upon harming or killing the baby is very unlikely.

These specific symptoms can help health professionals diagnose which type of postpartum depression the mother is experiencing. Awareness of the details and patterns of postpartum depression symptoms will help new parents seek appropriate treatment for the mother.

Dangerous Symptoms of Psychosis

Postpartum psychosis is the most extreme type of PPD, and while it is rare, it is very serious. Postpartum psychosis forms shortly after giving birth — within two weeks or in as little as 48 hours.

Postpartum psychosis is different than others types of PPD because the woman isnt aware that her actions and behaviors are psychotic.

Postpartum psychosis symptoms include:

  • Experiencing hallucinations of things or sounds that arent there
  • Becoming delusional with paranoid, suspicious, or irrational beliefs
  • Exhibiting extremely agitated or even violent behavior
  • Becoming easily confused or disoriented
  • Obsessing over the baby
  • Being extraordinarily fearful or anxious
  • Displaying bizarre behaviors that are uncharacteristic of the individual
  • Extreme and rapid mood swings
  • Refusing to eat or sleep
  • Taking self-harming actions
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Suicidal attempts
  • Thoughts of harming or killing her baby

Because postpartum psychosis presents a major risk of suicide or infanticide, hospitalization is usually required to keep the mother and baby safe.

The prosecutor continued to make references to her note-taking and attention to detail while failing to acknowledge that they all fit into the mental symptoms of postpartum depression, including obsession, forgetfulness, inability to concentrate, trouble remembering details, etc.

In addition, she failed to acknowledge the unconscious habits of nurses and healthcare providers who have been trained to keep meticulous records of medication administration, side effects, assessments, and evaluations related to healthcare interventions.

For someone facing such a difficult emotional struggle, and being gaslit by her providers who don’t believe her symptoms are anything more than “anxiety,” it is fair to assume she would document as much as she could to keep records, perform self-evaluation of the efficacy of her treatments, have records to discuss with her providers at future visits, and as a form of “obsession” which was noted to be a symptom of PPD, and psychosis.

There were so many details recounted in this case thus far that lead me to believe that Lindsay and her entire family were all victims of our failed healthcare system that is undertrained, overextended, and prioritizes profit over patient safety.

I hope that those who are residing on the court of public opinion will take this evidence into account before making their final verdict.

  • April Snipes RNFA, BSN, CNOR

April Snipes has been a nurse for almost 20 years. She runs her own business as a Registered Nurse First Assistant. Working alongside surgeons in the operating room doing what she loves lead her to see a dark side of healthcare she didn’t know existed. Immoral and unethical business practices she witnessed daily weighed so heavily on her heart that she was forced to make a decision; quit healthcare altogether, or do everything in her power to fix it. Not one to simply sit back and complain, April focused her anger and frustration on developing innovative solutions to address what she believes is the root cause of the rising costs of our broken healthcare system which kills or injures an untold number of patients daily. Over 5 years ago, April began the difficult task of learning to build high fidelity bodies that can be used by everyone for teaching, training, and ongoing practice. Her vision was to open community spaces all over the world where patients and providers have fun learning together, while reestablishing trust through truth & transparency. Empowering people with the knowledge they need to advocate for themselves and those they love is the path God lead her to from the time she was a little girl. Her hope is that speaking out will protect people from a system that continues to prioritize profits over their promise to do no harm.

A very good analysis. Thank you! Sounds like another tragedy caused by psychiatric drugs. Psychiatrist Peter Breggin, who has spent much of his life warning people of the dangers of psychoactive drugs, describes similar cases in his book Medication Madness.
