I’m pretty sure that most all of us are smarter now than we were as teenagers. I’m also sure most of us are smarter than we were, 20 years ago, 10 years ago, 5 years ago, 6 months ago and even yesterday.
I’d also be secure in saying that over the years, social norms change, people grow and evolve in their thinking and actions, and what was – may or may not be what is now.
I’m having a hard time with Kevin Hart being shamed to bow out of hosting the Oscars. What kind of Grinch-like people dig up tweets that are years old and use them as weapons? I don’t care about the Oscars, and won’t watch no matter who hosts, but to demean a person for a tweet from years before, and cause him to either grovel or lose a position he earned through hard work and years of doing right things is despicable and petty and hypocritical.
When Kyler Murray won the Heisman Trophy, it was the proudest day of his life. He worked hard, he trained hard, he played hard, and he was a success. Instead of internet trolls celebrating that success, they dug up “homophobic” tweets from when he was 14 or 15 years old. Instead of addressing his hard road to success, he was apologizing for teenage tweets.
The hypocrisy of these two examples is that there is no perfect person. Those that are judging and criticizing these men, have said equally as bad, they just haven’t been called out for it. Who is the person that has never criticized or made fun of others? We have all done it; in school, with our friends, at a party, with our families. Don’t say you didn’t, because we all have.
Things change over years and it is unfair to call people out for things that are different now than they were at that time. Look at comedy, it was based on jokes about color, and religion, and sexuality. It was funny at the time. Jackie Gleason, Red Skelton, Carol O’Connor, Rodney Dangerfield, Eddie Murphy, Richard Pryor were all funny guys.
It has become so politically stifling with the correctness, and the judging that it’s no fun to be in a workplace anymore, or at an office party, or at any party! If we should joke about the humanness of life and people, it can cost us our career when the word police complain.
Is it that we are all so sensitive we can’t take a joke, or even a criticism anymore? Do the people doing the complaining about a tweet from years ago not live in glass houses of their own, but for some vengeful person with no life seeking to soil others?
I would offer this advice to those people who feel the need to police other people’s speech. Get a life of your own, and butt out of others. Your hypocrisy is on display. I’ll just remind you that while you are paying attention to what people say, or tweet, or write, or joke about, your own shallow life is passing you by, and each day happens only one time. I would offer that it would be far better for you trolls to enhance your own life and stop trying to destroy other peoples’ lives. At the end you will have nothing to show for your life, other than the intimidation you gave to others. It makes you no better than them.
For the Oscars, you were way off base as well. You all think nothing of saying the worst most degrading things about our President, yet you cannot abide when years ago Kevin Hart did not want his young son to play with dolls. I think if you all rest in your safe space awhile it may be OK.
Grow up people, life is messy, you are not all of our keepers, and there is not one among any of you who has not done the same or worse at some point in your life. Hypocrites all, and a bunch of Grinches to boot.
