It’s been said throughout history that during times of peace, sons lay their fathers to rest and it’s been proven that during times of war; fathers lay their sons to rest.

Each year on the last Monday in the month of May, Americans remember and celebrate in remembrance the federal holiday of Memorial Day.

Communities across our great nation gather together with the families of the fallen and Veterans of every uniform taking part in honor ceremonies; heartfelt speeches; parades; BBQs and other events that give thanks and praise for those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our nation’s freedoms.

As an Army Veteran and Marine Gold Star Mother, Memorial weekend for my family and me, as well as all Gold Star Families across the nation celebrate this bittersweet holiday with a heavy heart.

My Marine son, Gunnery Sergeant Aaron Kenefick, was a casualty of war, killed in action during his fight during Operation Enduring Freedom; serving in Afghanistan thirteen years ago; he is laid to rest within our family’s hometown cemetery.

Coming from a long line of Patriots, I share the title of Gold Star Mother with my maternal great-grandmother whose youngest son was killed in action on Christmas Eve while serving in the Navy during WWII.

We stand strong in honor knowing our sons and daughters were less than 1% of American greatness. Our heroes wore every uniform and gave America another day of sovereignty through their ultimate sacrifices.

Monday, May 30th, at 3:00 p.m. est, the National Moment of Remembrance will honor all American soldiers and Marines who gave the ultimate sacrifice during a minute of silence and prayer.

This Public Law 106-579 was signed into law on December 28, 2000, and created the White House Commission on the National Moment of Remembrance, and it designated 3:00 p.m. Est on Memorial Day each year as the “National Moment of Remembrance.”

It is at this time all Americans are encouraged to pause for a minute of silence or prayer to honor and remember those who died in service to our great nation.

Arlington Cemetery as well as thousands of cemeteries throughout the nation will hold honor and remember ceremonies of our fallen heroes of all wars.

“The saddest place in America” is within Arlington National Cemetery’s Section 60.

“It has been called “the saddest acre in America.” It is also one of the most sacred. Section 60 in Arlington National Cemetery is the final resting place for young men and women who died fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.”

We pray for peace in support of the thousands of families grieving the loss of their sons and daughters as their ultimate sacrifice will never be forgotten.

This year the Memorial weekend is expected to have as many as 39-million Americans traveling away from home despite the rise in fuel pumps.

Millions will travel to Memorial sites and national parks; camping grounds; lakes and beaches as well as mountain resorts as they celebrate the beginning of summer and the men and women who afforded them the freedoms to live the American dream.

Please take time to pause and remember “America: Home of the Free because of the Brave.”
