The velocity of information is a scientific term created to help understand the physics of information relay. Technological advances in society have placed humanity in peril. Our brains yearn for a simpler time, but the reward center has been rewired for immediate gratification. We are slaves to the machine. Our hands hold onto steel for hours each day, and we type onto keyboards while relaying thoughts and stories to friends, coworkers, and loved ones.
Information is experiencing exponential growth based on Moore’s Law. There is little that can be done to slow it down. We are seeing a society filled with mental illness and an erosion of community. Politicians believe we can legislate solutions. Religious leaders state the world needs Jesus. The reality is that there will be no legislation of simpler and more polite times. The teachings of Jesus are more relevant now, but the information is flowing too quickly for anyone to listen above the noise.
I went for a walk and jog at a local track and watched as people sat on devices staring instead of speaking to one another. I walked to my car, grabbed my computer, and found a table at the track where I could sit and type out my thoughts. I began, “we are in a postmodern society living at the velocity of information.” Poetry. I continued to type out my thoughts, which became an educational and philosophical journey on this topic for my listeners. I’d love to hear your feedback on this one after you listen.
