Of the Muppet fame, Kermit the frog once said, “it isn’t easy being green.” Well, he should try being red in a city of blue because it isn’t any easier. Vanessa Simon is running for City Council District 31 in Queens, New York. While her district is blue, she is not letting that stop her. She tells the host of “After Dark” that she recognizes the problems facing her district and New York City, and “it breaks her heart to see our city falling apart the way it is.” But there is hope, Simon explains. It is “incumbent upon the GOP to modernize and capitalize upon its messaging” and appeal to the voters with its message of conservatism catered to different communities. She said this could be achieved by uniting the party and going to the local communities, building a solid foundation, and helping them understand conservative views with strategic, actionable pragmatic solutions.

The show ends with a discussion of co-host Andrew’s three-day road trip. He shares his experience traveling across America from Idaho and back to his homestead of Illinois. From this trip, he can surely say there is no place like America.

Vanessa Simon is the daughter of Haitian immigrants. She values and understands the true meaning of ‘the pursuit of happiness’ and America’s freedoms. She is a resident of Laurelton, Queens, and is committed to being a part of the growth and elevation of the 31st City Council District and helping it to achieve affordable, respectable, and safe living conditions for current and future residents. Simon was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and raised on Long Island, New York. She graduated from St. Anthony’s High School in South Huntington, NY. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from SUNY Geneseo.  Currently, she is a human resources business partner at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Whether by her profession or through community activism, she advocates for people by creating an equitable and fair environment. She has partnered and volunteered with KABOOM!, a national non-profit, to donate and build a new playground in Jamaica, Queens. She has partnered with the homeless shelter Restful Nights and the mental health facility at Faith Mission Crisis Center during the Covid-19 pandemic to provide cooked meals and personal care kits. Faith, Family, and Community are the triad of Simons’s fortitude and strength. She is a volunteer lector at St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
