And just like that, before it got started, it was all over. Such was the case for the much-talked-about CNN+, a paid-to-view streaming service offered by the now ailing cable news giant CNN. To the surprise of many, the plug was pulled on the streaming service within two weeks of going live.
CNN+ had promised to deliver high-end content that subscribers would not want to miss. The streaming service had managed to poach Chris Wallace from FOX cable news. News regulars like Anderson Cooper and Don Lemon were slated to provide original content in addition to their regular duties at CNN. The resident doctor Sanjay Gupta and Wolf Blitzer were also given hosting duties. Unfortunately, all of that talent (or some would say lack of talent) wasn’t good enough to kick start the brain streaming service Jeff Zucker, the network’s former boss.
According to news insiders, Zucker plunked down nearly $300 million to get the service up and running. Before the streaming service’s debut, he got canned by the network earlier this year for having an alleged affair with a consenting colleague.
It would seem CNN+ was doomed from the day of its inception. Another way of looking at it is that the content coming from a cable news network that had billed itself as the most trusted name in news simply isn’t trusted or newsworthy anymore.
