The past 3 years have been eye-opening in so many ways. The veil is being lifted on the widespread corruption within almost all of our “systems,” and my personal desire to take care of myself in hopes of never needing the help of the medical-industrial complex is at an all-time high.

Depending on who you talk to, or your personal perception, there could be a variety of thoughts and opinions on who’s really running things in this country. Some might say politicians, and while I think this is true to a certain extent, I don’t think politicians would be anything without the money and power of big pharma and the medical system behind them.

If the United States power distribution were a wheel, I personally place the medical system and the pharmaceutical industry at the hub.

I no longer question whether or not either of these industries has a desire for us to be healthy; they do not. Hospitals are getting bigger, and pharmaceutical companies are pumping out more and more drugs by the week. There is never any talk of a cure, true healing, self-reliance, or lifestyle modifications.

I have adopted a way of living in which I do the exact opposite of what an allopathic physician would suggest, including taking any prescription medications. In my attempt to be strong, and healthy and avoid the clinical cycle of disease, medication, side effects, new medication, etc., I have also had to face the reality of just how toxic our daily living is. We are inundated with chemical exposure in almost every facet of life.

I also realize that it can be an incredibly daunting task to eliminate these toxins. I am a start small and do what I can type person, and chipping away little by little has been great for me. Little changes that are relatively easy, help me feel accomplished and allow me to be more aware of what I put in and on my body.

Our skin is our largest organ, and what we put directly on our skin has the potential to be absorbed in large quantities. Chemicals circulating in our bloodstream and lymphatic system have a myriad of known complications with a very real possibility of dozens of unknown complications.

Just as we have the illusion of choice when it comes to our food, there are a handful of companies that own all of our common beauty products. Hair and skin care are billion-dollar industries, and grocery stores will lead you to believe that you have more options than you can count. It’s challenging to know what to buy and even harder to know what ingredients to avoid. I tend to align with smaller companies. Ones that fully disclose their entire ingredients list and have published research. Swapping out your daily beauty products can significantly reduce routine exposures.

A few other ways I avoid chemicals are in the kitchen. I try to have as little plastic as possible. I no longer use plastic storage containers or dishes. I have also tossed out all of my plastic cooking utensils. It is hard to make any purchases at the grocery store and not bring plastic home, so my goal is to eliminate where I can.

Clothing is an area that might get overlooked when we think about chemical exposures. The synthetic fibers are bad enough, let alone washing them in a toxic soup, aka laundry soap. Homemade laundry detergent is easy and affordable, but if DIY isn’t your forte, the number of companies that produce these types of products using only clean ingredients is on the rise, with so many great options out there. Another, perhaps strange, decision I have made is to not wear underwire bras. The new literature coming out examining possible links to breast cancer with lymph node involvement is very interesting.

The big picture can seem overwhelming; however, implementing little changes can make a big difference, in my opinion, with seemingly no risk. Using clean beauty products or getting rid of plastic where you can doesn’t pose an alternate threat. It is ultimately our responsibility to take care of ourselves. No one is coming to save us.
