According to a June 2021 National Health Statistics Report from the US Center for Disease Control:
“Among children and adolescents aged 2–19 years, the prevalence of obesity was 19.7%… Among adults aged 20 and over, the age-adjusted prevalence of obesity was 41.9%, severe obesity was 9.2%.”
The statistics for adults represent a 37% increase in obesity in about 20 years. Clearly, obesity is exploding in the United States, and we are paying for it big time in both health impacts and health costs.
Yet, woke post-modernists are intent on making obesity acceptable, so much so that medical doctors are advised to not weigh their patients unless completely necessary from a medical point of view. The new mantra, fat is beautiful, is appearing everywhere, from men’s magazines to mainstream advertising.
But have we gone too far? While the effort to not discriminate against, or in any way mock, obese people is certainly important, is political correctness encouraging an unhealthy lifestyle that we should help people to overcome, instead of celebrating?
To address this crucially important topic, we have invited two expert guests to be on our show this week, Dr. Charles Dinerstein, a medical doctor with over 25 years of experience as a vascular surgeon, and Cameron English, a writer, editor, and co-host of the Science Facts and Fallacies Podcast.
Dr. Dinerstein is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and Society for Vascular Surgery. He is also the Medical Director at the American Council on Science and Health (ACSH), a non-profit science and health education organization. Dr. Dinerstein also graduated with distinction from the George Washington University Healthcare MBA program.
Cameron English is the Director of Bio-Sciences at ACSH. Previously, he was managing editor at the Genetic Literacy Project, a nonprofit committed to aiding the public, media, and policymakers by promoting science literacy. His work has been published by Forbes, RealClearScience, Priorities Magazine, Science 2.0, and Mic. Cameron’s writing has also been featured in textbooks published by McGraw-Hill and Pearson Education to teach critical thinking skills to high school students.
