America has not seen the levels of conflict we see today since the Civil War, and unlike with the Civil War, today’s America is not between two separate geographic regions, but between neighbors and neighborhoods. What is at the root of this conflict?
The root cause would be conflicting visions of what America should look like.
On the one hand, you have the Conservative image of America, which used to also be the Liberal view of America – a land of opportunity and freedom where each of us, no matter the color of our skin, gender, or national origin, can strive to make of this world whatever we wish for it to be. Freedom and prosperity – freedom and justice for all.
Some Democrats still hold to this view. Joe Manchin comes to mind. It used to be that Americans shared a vision for America, but differed on some of the details. We all wanted free markets, but some wanted more regulation, and others wanted less. We differed in the things we said, but we all agreed we had the freedom to say those things.
Today we have other visions for America.
The two primary visions for America on the left are those of Giovanni Gentile, and Karl Marx. China today has a hybrid economy that resembles fascism in some ways, and communism in others. Could this be America’s future as well?
I’m not a psychic. I cannot tell you which vision will take hold. I can, however, tell you which visions are out there, and which one I prefer.
