Recently I heard from an acquaintance how her two college-age children are now getting Covid Relief money from their colleges. One got $3000 and the other got $2000, directly from the colleges, who got it from the Federal Government. This is not earmarked for tuition or books. It is just “free Covid money.”

Why Shovel Out Money to Students?

From the college’s point of view, it creates an incentive for students to enroll. “Enroll in our college and get free money!” Of course, it is not free money. You and I are paying for it. We pay for it in two ways: 1.) When we pay our Federal Income Tax; 2.) When we pay higher prices for a gallon of milk or gasoline – the higher prices of Bidenflation are a hidden tax on us created by deficit spending and the dollars printed by the Federal Reserve that Congress uses to “pay (NOT!)” for deficit spending.

From the Biden / Marxist / Progressive point of view, it creates more people in the habit of not working for a living and therefore dependent on the Federal Government for their food, clothing, and housing. The government is thereby teaching them to be helpless. The government is teaching them to sit and wait to be fed, clothed, and housed. Guess who else waits to be fed, clothed, and housed?  Babies and toddlers. Totally dependent on their parents.

Learned Dependency = Learned Helplessness

This is by design. Once these college students get part-time jobs to pay for tuition, they learn to be self-sufficient. Once these college students graduate and get jobs to pay for their own food, clothing, and housing, they learn to be self-sufficient. This is a normal part of growing up. You learn how to take care of yourself and not depend on your parents for everything. You separate from your parents, earn your own money, and stand on your own.

The Government Becomes the Parent

The Marxists now in power in our Federal Government realize that they can interrupt and divert the normal “growing into independence” process. How? By substituting the government for parents. Once college students become acclimated to receiving money from the government, the government becomes “Big Mama” and “Big Daddy.” The government, not your parents, will feed you, clothe you and house you.

Next, when you graduate (or even if you don’t graduate) you are told that you don’t have to work, you can get this thing called “unemployment pay.” Next, you are led into the wonderful world of Section 8 housing and SNAP cards for food. You are paid to stay at home. We the government will house you and feed you, just like Daddy and Mommy.

You get used to this easy life. Now you are hooked on government benefits just as surely as you can get hooked on drugs. Government benefits are addictive. It is so much easier to stay at home than to get up and go to work. As you never earn the self-esteem that comes with taking care of yourself, you feel bad about yourself. Depression, rage, and resentment follow. “I’m a victim! I deserve more!” Now the design of the government has come full circle. You have reverted to a toddler in the “terrible twos” throwing a temper tantrum. Instead of growing up, you have been infantilized by the government. Exactly as planned.

How to Prevent College Welfare Addiction

1. If you are a student, get a part-time job. Waiter or waitress. Construction. Retail clerk. Factory work. Nearly every business has a “now hiring” sign and is paying above the minimum wage. You will feel good about earning your own money instead of taking “free” money. You will acquire valuable job skills. You will learn the connection between work and money. You will learn where the money comes from.

Money is an abstraction. You can’t eat it. You can’t glue together dollar bills to make clothing for yourself. You can’t nail down dollar bills to make a roof over your head. Money is only a symbol of the work YOU DID to grow food, make clothing, or manufacture roofing shingles. You trade these paper symbols of your work for the tangible results of the work of others: food, clothing, and a house or apartment.

2. If you are a parent, steer your student toward skill-based study. Electricians, information technology (IT), medical professions, plumbing, manufacturing, etc. If the major does not have a job at the end of it, don’t pay your child’s college expenses to pursue that major. Tough love. Community colleges offer many skill-based studies.

There is an old joke about this. A heart surgeon calls a plumber to repair a leak at her home. The plumber repairs the leak in 15 minutes and says the bill is $200. The heart surgeon exclaims, “That’s $800 an hour! I’m a heart surgeon and I don’t make $800 an hour!” The plumber replies, “When I was a heart surgeon, I didn’t make $800 an hour either.” (BTW, it has been said that plumbers save more lives than doctors, because of the sanitation they provide with clean water and toilets.)

3. Vote for candidates who will cut government spending. As President Reagan famously said, “Starve the beast.” This Biden Beast is busy transforming your students into welfare weasels.

If your child studies a job skill that is in demand, they won’t end up living in your basement. Or worse, in the government basement of welfare dependency.
