With anti-America ⏤ anti-West “theories” seeming to proliferate in every corner of society, it can seem we face an onslaught of destructive ideas today ⏤ rather than a singular, malignant ideology.

What do all of these have in common?

  • ESG – Environmental, Social, and (corporate) Governance investing
  • DEI – Diversity Equity and Inclusion
  • SEL – Social Emotional Learning
  • CRT – Critical Race Theory  (& LGBTQ ideology)

All are ways to promulgate the tenets of Marxist collectivism as a replacement for America’s respect for individual rights, merit-based advancement, and economic liberty.

Environmental Social and (corporate) Governance, ESG

It is a system of scoring publically-traded companies on the basis of their environmental, social justice, and corporate citizenship rather than on profitability alone. Proponents claim that investing on the basis of environmental and social justice measures is an important part of balancing corporate greed with their obligation to join in the fight against global climate change, social injustice, etc.

So what’s wrong with that?

ESG is based on assumptions about profit that are fundamentally wrong  – not simply incorrect but thoroughly unjust.

  1. Profit is a necessary evil
  2. Profit must be earned at others’ expense

Both assumptions are unjustified indictments of economic freedom (called capitalism by its detractors). Economic liberty is the freedom to trade on one’s abilities, knowledge, skills, expertise, property, etc. Doing so profitably requires offering something that others value. In fact, making a profit requires that customers see greater value in your offering than they do in the dollars you are asking them to pay for it. If they don’t, obviously, they won’t buy. The profit incentive is the driver of every new advance that we enjoy today.

 ESG poses three dangers:

  • ESG ratings are essentially subjective because the metrics themselves are subjectively defined. This presents a terrific vulnerability, particularly for businesses in sectors disliked by the Social Justice Earth-First crowd driving this movement.
  • A business’s ESG rating can easily become, like CCP’s Social Score of its citizens, an impediment to financing, leasing, and other business functions. It can become a tool for those who wish to drive certain entire sectors out of the market; private education, oil, coal, natural gas, etc.
  • Replacement of profit incentives with subjectively-defined metrics that are measured by “overlords” will empower a mighty, perhaps international bureaucracy to engineer markets.

Diversity Equity and Inclusion, DEI:

Each of these metrics replaces actual fairness in the treatment of flesh-and-blood individuals with statistical measures of the organization’s demographical makeup.  This perfectly reflects the Marxist origins of the DEI doctrines; Marxism replaces accountability to persons with an authorization to engineer statistical parity among competing factions.

Skin color, sexual orientation, gender, and other “identity group” membership status are almost never related to an organization’s actual mission. So, the pursuit of DEI goals nearly always erodes the effectiveness of the organization.

Social Emotional Learning, SEL:

An educational model that (further) diminishes emphasis on academic achievement and replaces it with a focus on attitudes, feelings, social-justice worldview, and activism. Billed as an approach that builds resilience, self-awareness, and more responsible decision-making, its marketing is attractive. But its implementation has further eroded academic performance.

Some critics consider it more “coffee table psychology” product than of sound educational theory. Why?

The amount of thoroughly subjective squish in this approach tasks the school (the government, actually, in the person of the public school teacher) with responsibility for imparting and measuring such character attributes as “leadership” and “empathy.” Unlike most academic goals for which objective (albeit imperfect) measures have been devised, the student’s achievement level of SEL “goals” is entirely subjective; a matter of opinion.

Perhaps the most troubling outcomes of SEL in the public schools are seen in the students that SEL proponents would consider “successful.” These are the students that emerge from K-12 public schools prepared for nothing as much as Social Justice political activism.

Critical Race Theory, CRT (& LBGTQ ideology):

Like Marxism, its parent ideology, CRT divides the world into “oppressed” and “oppressor” categories. Where Karl Marx focused on economic classes, today’s Marxists also “collectivize” on the basis of race and sexual identity. In neither case is the individual considered on his/her own merits. The purpose of the ideology is to justify social engineering by force of law.

Each plank of the Marxist platform takes autonomy, control, and dignity away from the individual.

  1. ESG concentrates terrific influence over corporate activity into the hands of a few.
  2. DEI replaces the fair treatment of people with statistical parity among factions.
  3. SEL replaces objective academic standards with subjective goals defined by teachers.
  4. CRT converts social grievance into political capital, guaranteeing an ever-growing list of “identity groups” competing for favor.

What’s the solution?

Bad ideas demand better, more powerful ideas. America was founded on such an idea. It’s time we restored it!

Respect for each individual’s natural rights is the basis of moral conduct, the purpose of Law, and the measure of Justice.
