How can you tell when a politician is lying? The answer, generally, is, “Their lips are moving!”
I have used this joke as an example, not of the corruption of the political class but of the American citizen who continues to hire liars, cheats, and thieves to represent them.
But what happens when we become so conditioned to lies that we not only accept them but reject the truth?
In her book “The Crown of a Life,” Agnes Tremore makes this prescient statement: “If a lie is only printed often enough, it becomes a quasi-truth, and if such a truth is repeated often enough, it becomes an article of belief, a dogma, and men will die for it.”
Today I see many people who are willing to die for a lie. Even worse, they seem prepared to kill for it. Lies about vaccines, lies about the Dept. of Justice and the IRS, and even lies about your rights.
And yet we routinely return to the politician who states, rather like the character Captain Renault in the movie Casablanca, “I’m shocked, shocked to find that lying is going on in here!”
If we are to stop “the lying” in its tracks, it will not be the actions of an individual but of We the People.
Who in America will stand up for the truth and point out the lie, like the boy pointing out that the emperor is naked?
Who will stand in the gap to thwart the flow of this evil?
Who will show the sentiment of Nathan Hale and proudly declare, “I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country”?
