The withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan soil was completely motivated by a political calculus to coincide with the twentieth anniversary of 9/11. This was one red line that the Biden Administration was determined to keep no matter what. 9/11 was the reason that US troops were in Afghanistan in the first place. It was former President Bush that sent our troops to Afghanistan to fight the war on terror. It was so that terrorism could not find a foothold in the mountains of this war-torn country. Ironically, the reason we committed the blood and treasure was precisely the same reason why we left.

According to reports from Arabic newspapers, Afghanistan’s new spiritual leader Sheikh Hibatu Allah Akhwanzadeh, whom they are predicting to be “Amir al Mu’mineen” (commander of the faithful/ actually the Caliph) of Afghanistan, does not intend to spread terror to the neighboring countries or even outside but to concentrate to rule Afghanistan as a Fundamentalist Sharia-compliant, Islamic Emirate. If true, this is the opposite of Iran’s Shia Islamic state that intends to spread its influence, religion, and power all over the world.
Let’s take a strategic look at the Taliban and their future plans with IQ al-Rassooli. The lasting question that we will be asking for years, if not decades, is what does the future of the war on terror look like? What does Afghanistan look like 10 years from now? What does the Middle East look like 10 years from now? Do we expect more terror attacks here in the US over the next ten years? What steps should America take if we are to prevent attacks on US soil in the war on terror?
