Juneteenth is recognized as a federal holiday in the United States. It commemorates the emancipation of slaves on June 19, 1865. While many in the Black community had celebrated the day ⏤ only recently, it became a federal holiday and is celebrated on the third Saturday in June. Texas, a red state, was the first state to recognize Juneteenth before it became a national holiday.
The hosts of After Dark commemorate Juneteenth by remembering the president who first gave it attention. No, not Barack Obama, the first black president, who had two terms in office. It was none other than President Donald J. Trump who suggested that Congress use its powers to make it a holiday. Needless to say, the Democrats co-opted Trump’s idea and refused to move on to this suggestion until after Trump left office.
