Today a jury found Derek Chauvin guilty of all three charges. He knelt on a man’s neck for 9 minutes and 29 seconds, and that man died. He pushed away an EMT medic who tried to help. Nearly everyone in America and the world has seen some part of the video.

After fearing that a not guilty verdict would bring riots, burning, looting, and other violence to America’s cities, the nation breathes a collective sigh of relief.

However, the press, congressional leaders, community organizers, and the President himself all made comments during the trial that could have intimidated the jury and the judge. Joe Biden said he was “praying for the right verdict.” Obviously, the President thought he knew what the “right” verdict was, even though he had not heard the jurors’ evidence. Only the jurors did. He explained that he only said this after the jury was sequestered so as not to influence them.

What about future jurors in future trials? Will they vote the way they think the President wants them to vote? Or vote the way community organizers want them to vote? The organizers who hint at mob violence if they do not get the vote they want? That’s when jurors feel threatened by violence themselves. When trials are pre-determined by the threat of mob violence, then they are the puppets of the mob. The mob is really deciding, not the jurors.

When the mob decides, we call that mob justice. Mob justice is not the rule of law with evidence to be heard by an impartial jury. It is the rule of a mob that has already made up its mind. What we used to call a lynch mob.

Let’s look at two mob agitators: Maxine Waters and Chelsea Handler.

Mad Maxine Flies to Minneapolis to Lead the Mob

According to Katie Pavlich writing in Town Hall, Waters flew from Dulles International Airport to Minnesota-St. Paul International Airport on Saturday, April 17, just days ahead of a verdict in the George Floyd Officer Derek Chauvin trial. That night, Waters went to meet with protestors and demanded a guilty verdict for Chauvin “or else.”

According to the New York Post, This week, US Rep. Maxine Waters of California came under fire for inflaming tensions in advance of the Chauvin verdict, telling a crowd of demonstrators to “get more confrontational.”

The comments irked [Judge] Cahill, who said the inflammatory remarks might have given Chauvin’s lawyer “something on appeal that may result in this whole trial being overturned.”

Overturning the verdict is what Maxine really wants. She wants violence. And if the verdict is overturned on appeal due to her comments, she’ll get violence.

Chelsea Handler, the Queen of Hearts, Says No Trial, Just Verdict

All rise. Her Honor Chelsea Handler sez… We don’t need any stinkin’ trial! The sentence comes before the verdict! Her considered legal opinion was handed down on Twitter: “So pathetic that there’s a trial to prove that Derek Chauvin killed George Floyd when there is a video of him doing so.” Like her fictional alter ego, the blind fury herself, the Queen of Hearts in Alice In Wonderland, Chelsea desires “off with his head!” without the benefit of due process, trial, evidence, or jurors.

The Worm May Turn

Those who incite mindless mob violence now may find it turned against themselves later. Communist agitator and one-time Soviet Union Secretary of Foreign Affairs Leon Trotsky found himself exiled by Joe Stalin. An agent of Stalin murdered Trotsky in Mexico. Even the best of comrades may turn on one another. Why? Because power-lust consumes them. After they destroy us, they’ll turn on each other.

Bad Apples and Lynch Mobs

Personally, I am convinced that Derek Chauvin is guilty. He was a bad apple in the police and needed to be brought to justice. Good police officers will applaud a bad apple removed from their ranks. The old saying is that one bad apple will spoil a barrel of good apples.

Lynch mobs, however, are not the way to remove a bad apple. The rule of law, due process, the presumption of innocence until proven guilty, the right to see and hear the evidence against you, and the judgment by an impartial jury of your peers is the right way to punish crime and remove the bad apple.

The lynch mob ends up burning the entire barrel of apples, bad and good. Mobs do not serve justice. Mobs serve blood lust. Mob violence is not America. The Constitution and the rule of law in America.
