During my recent travels, I was asked many questions about what governments can and cannot do. One theme repeatedly came to mind, does government serve the people, or do people serve the government. In his first inaugural address, George Washington said, “And since the preservation of the sacred fire of liberty, and the destiny of the republican model of Government, are justly considered as deeply, perhaps as finally staked, on the experiment entrusted to the hands of the American people.” But today, not only does it seem that the sacred fire of liberty is going out, but that the very idea of self-government is under attack. The question I was asked most frequently is, “what can we do about it?” So today, I want to show some examples of the dictatorial acts of those in government and discuss what the American people must do if we wish to remain the land of the free and the home of the brave.
