On February 3rd, a Norfolk Southern train with 150 cars attached derailed just as it approached the western Pennsylvania border. In the immediate aftermath of the derailment which involved just over 50 of the cars, a fire broke out which included toxic chemicals. There have been many reports over the past 10 days regarding fish dying, residents having health issues, and drinking water under heavy scrutiny.
I decided to stop reading the headlines and immerse myself in the conversation. I followed the train’s route on google maps and began calling businesses alongside the railroad. The residents were kind and willing to speak to me about their experiences.
With some internet sleuthing, I managed to identify the building in the videos on google maps, and I called Ceramfab, Inc., the building directly in front of the derailment. I was shocked to find them open and willing to speak with me about the experience.
The stories from residents paint a picture of a community that has been devastated and may never recover. The town is a close-knit community of approximately 4,500-4,800 residents. The disaster should be headline news, with aid coming immediately from across the country. There are reports now of the chemicals being downstream and found in West Virginia’s water supply. The Ohio River is compromised.
Today’s podcast is more journalism than podcast, and that is because the residents deserve facts and a spotlight to assist them. Please share and help shine a light of help and assistance on East Palestine, Ohio.
