Ukraine’s Fight Against Tyranny Sets Urgent Example for America

On Feb. 24, as massive Russian ground and air invasion forces closed in on his Kyiv capital, a former sitcom actor who had portrayed a schoolteacher-turned-president became the real deal…and then some.

U.S. officials had offered 44-year-old Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky who topped President Vladimir Putin’s kill-or-capture list assistance in leaving his country.

That threat remains a serious one. As subsequently reported by the Times of London, more than 400 Russian mercenaries of the Wagner Group – a private militia – had arrived in Kyiv from Africa about five weeks earlier on precisely such an assassination mission.

And after all, it certainly wouldn’t be the first time a besieged leader would have skipped town.

Recall, for example, when embattled President Ashraf Ghani abandoned his Kabul palace to insurgent Taliban fighters and reportedly fled with a helicopter full of cash to Uzbekistan during the Biden helter-skelter Afghanistan withdrawal debacle.

In sharp contrast, Zelenskyy had told the American Embassy: “The fight is here; I need ammunition, not a ride.”

Dressed in a khaki T-shirt and fatigues, President Zelensky posted a starkly serious and vitally inspirational cellphone video message to the invaders: “We aren’t afraid of anything…We aren’t afraid to defend our country…we  aren’t afraid of Russia.”

Recognizing his personal risk, Zelensky said: “The enemy has marked me as target number one, my family as target number two…They want to destroy Ukraine politically by destroying the head of the state.”

President Zelensky concluded his video call telling his fellow national loyalists that “this might be the last time you see me alive.”

Ukraine’s military and civilian resistance forces have responded with fierce determination, valor, and battlefield successes that have garnered global amazement, admiration, and support.

After all, who could have imagined that a small nation led by a broadly underrated political novice could possibly have the unrelenting will and tenacity to resist the greatest unprovoked tyrannical invasion of a European country in over half a century.

As a case in point, the New York Times couldn’t possibly have been more misguided than in its featured Feb. 21 quest essay authored by journalist Olga Rudenko that ridiculed Zelensky in its title as “The Comedian-Turned-President Is Seriously in Over His Head.”

The Gray Lady’s invited hit piece charged that Zelensky’s opponents thought he would “break away from the old ways and end corruption,” described him as a “Russian-speaking man born in eastern Ukraine, [who] would all but sell the country off to Russia,” and “said he was an oligarch puppet.”

Rudenko then wrote: “Yet the truth is more prosaic. Mr. Zelensky, the showman and performer, has been unmasked by reality. And it has revealed him to be dispiritingly mediocre,” adding that: “Gestures, for him, are more important than consequences;” that “strategic objectives are sacrificed for short-term benefits;” and that “words he uses don’t matter, as long as they are entertaining.”

But, then again, America’s complicit and spectacularly corrupt legacy media has a habit of provably picking and politicking the wrong winners and losers; failing to recognize true patriots versus pretenders.

It was Volodymyr Zelensky, after all, who had been elected in a 2019 landslide victory pledging to clean up the corruption that dominated Ukraine’s oligarch-dominated ruling system, including wealthy incumbent President Petro Poroshenko.

Whereas delivering on that promise has had limited success, it should be noted that some of that corruption can be traced along a trail that leads directly back to the U.S. White House.

No, I’m not referring to the imploded impeachment charade surrounding President Trump’s telephone conversation with President Zelensky discussing this very matter.

Recall hearing no media outcry when the second-highest U.S. official bragged with video cameras rolling at a Council on Foreign Relations event how in March 2016 he had threatened Ukrainian President Poroshenko that the Obama administration would pull $1 billion in U.S. loan guarantees if his government didn’t immediately fire its top Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin who was investigating Burisma, a corrupt energy company that was reportedly paying his son Hunter more than $83,000 monthly to serve in a no-show position on its board.

In his own words, Biden recalled telling the Ukraine president: “You’re not getting the billion. I’m going to be leaving here in, I think it was about six hours…I’m leaving in six hours. If the prosecutor is not fired, you’re not getting the money.”

Biden added, “Well, son of a bitch, he got fired!”

As for defending America’s Constitutional free speech rights, a tyranny of media oligarchs has been allowed to block known information about Biden family Ukraine, Russia, China, and other international influence-peddling activities until after the 2020 election and even de-platformed a sitting president from communicating with the public that elected him.

Meanwhile, as Ukraine demonstrates resolute commitment to defend its national sovereignty and rights at any cost, America has opened its southern border to invasions by criminal human trafficking and drug cartels.

As Kyiv young people gather in bunkers to make Molotov cocktails in a desperate defense of deadly macroaggressions against their futures, their American counterparts struggle with microaggressions over offenses of those who use wrong gender pronouns.

As Ukrainian civilians and military take up arms in patriotic pursuit of national survival, woke warriors in American schools, workplace, and even military environments conduct divisive critical race theory and 1619 program indoctrination campaigns against our rich national history, culture, and values.

Reminiscent of President Volodymyr Zelensky, another derisively underrated former actor named Ronald Regan envisioned his nation as a bright beacon of hope for its people and the world.

President Reagan’s peace through strength policy in defense of liberties can be credited with a key role in defeating tyrannical Russian aggression and oppression once before as exemplified in his demand, “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down that wall.”

As Reagan explained to his foreign policy advisor Richard Allen in 1977, “My idea of American policy toward the Soviet Union is simple, and some would say simplistic. We win and they lose.”

President Reagan also issued an urgent reminder that “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction.”

Reagan added: “We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children what it was once like in the United States where men were free.”

And whereas Ukraine, just as America, remains marred by high-level corruption as an imperfect model of democracy, its people are demonstrating recognition that their battle for freedom from tyranny is worth fighting for at any cost. The small nation has proven this by risking everything in defiance of one of the world’s mightiest armies.

Ukraine’s inspirational example serves as a clarifying reminder that fragile liberties we have inherited from other great leaders and courageous fighters must never be taken for granted.

Whether surrendered from the inside by jaundiced judiciaries, hijacked by rigged elections, revoked by executive decrees, censored by speech police oligarchs, coopted by Marxist cancel culture acolytes…or yes, attacked by invading armies…the consequences are the same.

Once lost, precious freedoms are gone forever.

I only we had true patriots in leadership here; true patriots willing to make the ultimate sacrifice to save our Republic. Mike Pence could have saved us from the coming tyranny here, but chose instead to go along with the narrative of a fair election.
