On May 22-28, 2022, the 75th World Health Assembly convened at United Nations (UN) headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, with delegates from 194 nations to vote on the Biden administration’s amendments. These amendments would have handed over national sovereignty and authority to the WHO in the event of a health emergency. It is amazing to consider that the nation proposing handing over their sovereignty was the United States of America, while the nation opposing and ultimately eating the attempt to push to review these amendments were the many countries of the African region.
Beyond the fact that the United States should be advocating for a nation’s sovereignty (we hear that phrase with every Ukraine/Russia headline), it is interesting to consider the region that opposed these amendments in more detail. The African region has the most interaction of all nations with the WHO. African countries have been on receiving end of the WHO’s ‘benevolence’ and ‘help’ countless times throughout the past decades, and its people have been on the receiving end of the medical-industrial complexes testing and trials with little informed consent. Given this history, it is no wonder that they are the most skeptical about the WHO’s intentions.
The executive and administrative agencies of the United States should return to their charter and the constitution, and avoid relinquishing the rights of the citizens to a multilateral body. Additionally, the United States should never advocate for other countries to relinquish their sovereignty and self-determination if we are to remain the Leader of the free world.
