We Need Boots on the Ground to Win
“The time to start fighting is now, for we can’t wait to save our country,” says Monica De La Cruz Hernandez, who is running for Congress in Texas 15th Congressional District. The Congressional candidate joins “After Dark With Rob And Andrew” to discuss her 2022 run for Congress, which she came close to winning against incumbent Vicente Gonzalez Jr. in 2020. Although she didn’t win the election, she said she came extremely close in a blue district and is energized by that momentum to run again. She describes her opponent Gonzalez as being similar to Kamala Harris in that neither wants to go to the border to see the crisis. He “has avoided the border like Kamala Harris and Joe Biden.”
De La Cruz-Hernandez says many in her district, including some in the GOP, don’t think she can win as a candidate in a blue district. But she says what they fail to realize is many on the border have conservative views and values and see “someone who looks like them, talks looks like them,” and shares their values. She said contrary to what the Democrats say, the Republicans have a “tent big enough to hold us (Hispanics) all.”
Monica De La Cruz-Hernandez describes herself as coming from humble beginnings. Her grandmother immigrated to the U.S. as a child to flee political injustice in Mexico. Her grandfather was a first-generation American and served in the U.S. Navy. mother raised her and her brother as a single mother. De La Cruz-Hernandez said she grew up with strong values, perseverance, respect, and courage that motivated her to be involved in her community. Living on the border and attending public schools, she said she saw firsthand the effects of a broken immigration system and failed government policies.
