I frequently hear people say that the Constitution is dead or meaningless. I can understand their sentiments, especially when I see those in government at all levels simply ignoring the supreme law of the land. But I think those who walk away from the Constitution are missing two very important points. First, the Constitution is a tool. Like any other tool, it can do nothing unless it is used and can only be effective if used properly. Second, everyone I have heard makes these arguments seem to be looking for someone else to pick up these tools, but they never seem ready to do so themselves.
Today, I want to take a look at this long-neglected tool. Not simply to see what the Constitution could do if it were used, but what We the People can do with it. Abraham Lincoln said, “The people — the people — are the rightful masters of both Congresses, and courts — not to overthrow the Constitution, but to overthrow the men who pervert it.”
Isn’t it about time we pick up this old and rusty tool, clean it off, and get back to the work of overthrowing those who are perverting the Constitution?
