When I first heard about the FBI raid on President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home, my instincts said this was a political attack. However, in keeping with the standards here at The Constitution Study, I waited, looked for more information from multiple sides, and took some time to analyze and consider the facts and data. While we are still in the early days of this scandal, what I have found so far gives me little reason to reconsider those first instincts.
Two hundred and forty-six years ago, our Founding Fathers, frustrated with the tyranny and injustice of their central government, penned these words as they justified their claims of independence. “That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,”
We the People, establish governments to protect all of our rights, not just those we agree with. We consent to delegate to those governments the powers listed in the constitutions that created them. But We the People, must also remember our duty in this compact. “That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it…” Based on what I have seen, both in this scandal and previous ones, it appears that if We the People do not alter the federal government soon, our only choices will be between awful and terrible.
